Saints, Gregg Williams and Bounties

I haven't seen them too much nor do I know anything of their reputation.

That's not important.

When it's PROVEN that they had bounties, EVERYTHING becomes tainted. Players that were injured (even by accident) could wonder whether it was because of a bounty. Retired players lose leverage against the league now that it has been proven that fellow players willingly participated in bounties... The whole integrity of the game comes under suspicion.

Playing hard is one thing. Creating bounties, incentives, with the goal of injuring someone, and having them carted off the field, is completely a different story.

Whether or not NO succeeded in achieving their bounties, isn't important. The mere fact they had them, is what's wrong.

Roger Goodell's #1 issue with this isn't going to be whether NO actually hurt someone. It's that they created bounties. Now, comes the punishments to the franchise, coaches, and players.

My personal take on the whole matter (I'm not a huge NFL follower) is that if they are deliberately trying to hurt someone then they should be fined. Playing in the NFL is how these guys earn a living and if a player gets knocked out of the league because someone wanted to make a little money on the side then, yeah, I think the NFL should do all they can to protect their employees.

It's football. Everyone who goes out there is trying to hurt each other (within the rules). Suh has had 100x as many dirty plays as the whole Saints defense this year.

I find it funny how people are saying almost every NFL team does this. Rome had about 3 former players call in yesterday and all 3 of them said they have never heard of this or heard of any former teammates even bringing it up. Given they were former players but the debate was that this has been going on for years.

Really? That is surprising? Former players don't want to snitch on their teams or taint their HC/Coordinators reputations? How surprising.

Isn't the point of football to hit the other player as hard as you can?

I saw Brett Favre once get demolished, looked like a sure injury, but he jumped up and totally congratulated the guy who hit him for a great hit.
That's when I became a Favre fan.

Exactly. Players are trying to knock each other out and hurt each other all the time, within the rules. Saints barely had any helmet to helmet calls last year or any kind of illegal hits called last year.

https://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2...7/saints-nfl-suspensions-appeal.ap/index.html

A three-member appeals panel has overturned the player suspensions in the Saints bounty case, according to a source familiar with the ruling.

The panel overturned a ruling by NFL system arbiter Stephen Burbank that commissioner Rodger Goodell was within his powers under the collective bargaining agreement to suspend four players for their alleged roles in a pay to injure system.

According to source, the suspensions are voided immediately, howevever the commissioner can reconsider discipline if -- and only if -- there is evidence of intent to injure beyond just a performance pool.
