It is funny how we always talk in soundbites and that is all anyone can remember or think of in regards to anything. Anyone who has studied Hitler and the Third Reich would know that before he pulled the country off the cliff Hitler first lead them out of the worst depression the country had ever seen and united the vast majority of the citizenry in a way nearly unprecedented in modern history, improving nearly ever facet of life in Germany for nearly every single citizen. Of course that was part of the master plan, to get everyone going in the same direction then lead them slowly down to hell, but the first part showed very strong leadership ability and the knowledge and foresight to solve the country's problems.
In fact life was so good that even when he started full-on into the holocaust most Germans did not want to believe what was going on, he kept most in line through providing a good life, much easier to control that way than exclusively by fear (which he used as well when necessary). For example, at Dachau, which was built more or less in the middle of the city, the people living around and near the concentration camp, who would have been friends and neighbors with Nazis working there, were shocked when they found out what was really going on behind the walls after it all ended.
