What's new

Shaq

Most disruptive defender in the NBA. Legit wing size, can guard 1-3, shot 38% from 3 last year in a limited role. Played PG in college so not just a stanchion offensively, has a little juice there.

Could be a gem and could realistically be better than Royce. Even if he just stays 9th man, he should have plenty of opportunities for minutes the second anyone 1-4 goes down with an injury.

Well that doesn't suck.

This could be the tipping point of our roster going from possible contender to a team that can beat the Lakers/Clippers/Bucks with everybody healthy on both squads.

If you are not a team with the best 2 players on the floor, and you are trying to win by attrition, you have to have legit NBA players 10 men deep. We do now.
Shaquille Harrison is a 6'7" combo guard who shoots left handed and plays hard-nosed defense, even for the losing Chicago Bulls. This guy has average 1 steal per game while only playing 11 mpg. He also had 0.5 blocked shots per game. And he never had rim protection backing him up. If he gets 15 mpg with the Jazz, I'd expect him to get 1.5 spg.

He's also a decent spot up shooter, who has never played for a team that is running system ball. Or if the Bulls had a system they were doing - it was lost on me and them.

He shoots 38% from 3, 78% from the line, can handle, and plays tough defense. What's not to love?

What a great pickup by the Jazz! Will definitely improve our perimeter defense. I'm not exactly sure where he gets minutes when everyone is healthy but I guess we'll see. He could become really valuable in a playoffs.

He looks smaller than 6'7". Some sites say he is 6'4". But damn, that reach and being that active in the highlights is crazy good.

This move was so obvious, I knew there was something we didn't know. Looks like he has a hand injury...oh and the Jazz were obviously interested in him. But tell me I was crazy for saying we should wait to raise the pitchforks.
Yeah, seems like it's possible we won't be avoiding the luxury tax and we won't be starting the season with fewer players just to avoid the tax. Now we might make some move later that gets us under, but at the very least it looks like the new owner is open to spending some extra money to fortify the 10-12th spots on the roster... I still hate the combo of Favors+Azubuike as the combination that took away our two best assets to improving the team.

Mudiay averaged 15.7 minutes last year. Granted, this was in the setting of Conley being out a lot (which I guess could still happen), and now obviously having a full year of Clarkson gives less minutes, but with him being able to play 3 positions, I think we should be seeing 15 minutes at least (not that we will, just that we should). And, really, I'd say he could guard 1-4. Not that there's evidence of him guarding 4, but if you asked yourself the question of who you'd rather have defending 4s between him, Bojan, and Niang, I think the answer then says "sure, he can guard 4s."

I also hope and think this makes Royce better, and I think prioritizing giving Shaq minutes is looked at in the light of making Royce better, because Royce is given the toughest assignment every single night. And there isn't a single other person tasked with any kind of expectation on the perimeter, and the results I believe have become underwhelming because he's asked to do this more than he should (like Rudy). So if Shaq can take some of that pressure off, it will have a synergistic effect.

Interested to see what happens among the pile of players of Shaq/Oni/Oneale/Hughes. Does anyone overtake Royce?

This makes the Tucker move extra puzzling. It barely saved any tax money...but whatever. I'm glad that Harrison is here and the new owner is not skimping out. Not my money :)

Just a money saver... nothing more to see there. I think they also got cash in that deal so it was more than just the 300k in salary plus the tax saved. I think it makes more sense now as we weren’t going to get all the way under the tax without a bigger trade anyway... that is still on the table... maybe even more so now... say Shaq and Oni are both ready and they feel they can comfortably trade Mike or Royce or someone with a bigger salary.

Once you hit the tax no need shaving a million or two around the edges... in for a Penny... in for a pound.

I don't know but it would sure make his extension kinda not great.
Royce is still an established nba wing and his contract would be very movable. I mean if Jerami Grant can get 20M a year Royce at 8M ain’t no big deal.

I really wish someone would get nitty and gritty into the financials to see what the Tucker move is suppose to signal or if it really just was the cheapest move of all time.

so maybe i'm wrong about this guy... he's not just a defense specialist after all... imagine having Royce handling the ball ,running the pick and roll, breaking down defense against a very good playoff team in Indiana... we might be looking at DM's long term backcourt partner folks

More like 9m, but when the organization is sweating amounts in the 100ks, everything should get some scrutiny.

The other part is if the Jazz just had Royce and his meager cap hold heading into the offseason, signing Shaq to a multi-year would've been a lot easier (given that they were always going to overpay Favors and Clarkson). If things go very well here, then the Jazz probably just auditioned him for his longterm home elsewhere.
