Shin Splints

Help - I am 31 years old and trying to get back shape. My issue is I keep getting shin splints even from moderate exercise. It is really annoying as the pain makes it so I don't want to try to even walk.

Does anyone have any ideas or cures?

Lose weight via non weight-bearing activities...I use a Concept 2 rowing machine which burns as many if not more calories than doing elliptical/running, etc.
Stretch
Ice them after any and all exercise. One good method is to freeze water in a styrofoam cup and then rip away the top of it and ice up and down the shins very slowly. Continue ripping away some styrofoam as needed so you can continue icing.
Ibuprofen

What kind of shoes are you using when you run?

There's a way to tie them so them really help to prevent shin splints.

I used to get them all the time. But then I changed the shoes and the way I tied them, and I've never looked back...

For me, it was all about the shoes. I used to get the cheapest shoe I could find. Once I decided to do a little research and spend more money, it greatly helped. Also, build your calves. Stand on the edge of a step, let your weight go down to where your heel is as far below the step as possible and do a calf raise from there. Do that repeatedly.

Just deal with it for a few weeks and it eventually just goes away. Used to get them something fierce every summer when I started training for football. By the time the games started it was no longer an issue. Ice, tape and aspirin is what we used.

Nasty shin splints in late summer/early fall and one nasty sore arm and shoulder from baseball in late winter/early spring. Ah... memories.

I feel your pain... I'm 46, go to the gym each morning and walk/run on the treadmill. I can go for about the first mile, then the pain will start to set in. But I've found for me, that a lot of the time, I'm trying to go to steep on the the incline, so if I back off, and go back to level, then the pain goes away. I try to push it every day though a little bit more. It's working, slowly but surely. I hope to eventually get back to were I have no issues (like when I was young lol).
Shoes do help a lot as well, no doubt at that. Lucky for me I'm a shoe junkie, so it just gives me excuses to buy more shoes, and be able to justify it to the better half :)

Try not to run downhill. Be wary of the surface you run on in general and try to go as soft as is feasible. Some bandaid stuff you can do. You can wrap them before. Try orthotics. Take ibu. After you can ice and take more ibu. Longterm make sure you are getting your nutrients especially calcium. But ultimately time is what heals shin splints.

I had the same problem with shin splints. I went to my doctor and he told me about these. I was skeptical but they worked.

You should be able to get them at any medical supply store.
I believe there's one in the Fort Union area near the Simply Mac store called JQ Medical Supply.

I once lost 17kg of weight going from 84-67.
i was out of shape like a mutha****

start with swimming it works best. rule of thumb is you never do less than the previous workout. always do more push yourself to do more
went swiming 3-5 times a week in the beginning later alwasy 5 times
i started with 40 laps(25m) each 6 weeks later I was doing 200 laps.
swimming is the best thing to start working out, absolutly no risk of injury

after 2-3 weeks i could do other workouts (running and martial arts).

Ok so I have already tried some $150 dollar nike running shoes and it did no good. Our community has a very nice indoor lap pool. I will try swimming every day for a couple weeks.

Also if anyone has any recomendations for shoes or places to buy shoes where they know about this stuff I would appriciate it.

yeah swimming is the best workout for weight loss.
problem with swimming is you get hungry and tend to eat more, you should resist that temptation to eat more then you usually do.

i gained about 20kgs in about a year because my ankle was turned bad and stop sporting.
after that i decided to lose the weight.

you should also eat good stuff, healthy. but watch your calorie intake about 1250-1750.
if you diet you should have a rest/fun day. a day when you get to eat anything you like as much as you like.
so dieting doesnt get boring. so you can have eat what you want 1 day in the week. gives you something to look foward to.

about shoes dont know much about shoes.

Heath Bell(former Padres' closer and new Marlins closer) had a pretty funny shirt, "I am in shape, round is a shape." I found that pretty funny.

I've spent a lot of money on shoes and orthotics (and surgery) for all this. Sometimes the cheaper stuff has worked better than the expensive stuff. Mostly trial and error. Sometimes I felt like the guy at the shoe store knew more than my doctor and sometimes not. I'd say find a podiatrist and have them take a good look at your feet. Start there I guess.

Do you live in SLC? If so Wasatch Running is a good place for shoes and they know what they are doing. I tried New Balance up in Sugarhouse once and not happy.

How do you walk? I forget the terms but there are basically two kinds of runners, those who feet have a tendency to roll in, and those with a tendency who roll out (or something like that). Certain shoes are designed to help you compensate for your natural tendencies. When I bought my running shoes they had one of the workers watch me walk/run and then recommenced me a certain type of shoe that helped out reducing my discomfort running.

I had shin splints for 6 months. Got sick had to quite playing basketball they went away.
I was told when I went back to play (by a doctor/friend) to stretch better, drink water an hour before playing and to buy shoes with arch support. I now do all of those things after 2 years I have not had them come back. The shoes are bought were just basketball specific that seemed to have more arch support. Had 2 pairs now and always buy the ones with the support.

Pronate? I believe that's what your describing. The pronation of your feet is key. That's why I like trying several different running shoes to see which one best supports the stupid way I run. I naturally walk like a duck. I wish my parents would have corrected this hereditary disorder when I was young.
