Should the Jazz shut Favors down for a while?

The G-League is over now. We would have seen if Udoka was ready to bring backup 5 minutes to gives Favors rest and still maintain the team identity with the style of play. Really sucks he went down. He could have been a big athleticism boost to the team.

He's been able to give Rudy rest and be a capable backup which we didn't have last year and was our glaring weakness.
The glaring weakness was that the Jazz did a horrific job filling the backup spot. It would improve almost by default by grabbing any random player. Ed Davis was arguably the worst in the league and Tony Bradley isn't an NBA player. Bigs that do big things but can't shoot or dribble are not rare commodities. I don't know who would've come for the BAE, but that's what they should've spent since I guarantee you the Jazz are not retaining this team through next year's trade deadline, and they will probably have to offload an asset they're going to have to dig out of somewhere that could've been used to replenish team depth or improve the roster with. Bobby Portis comes to mind. Or you know, play the next Shaquille O'Neal that the Jazz were raving about. Or play Morgan.

And if Favors breaks down half way through the first season he's under contract, he's hardly more help than a scrub. Hopefully rest does the trick but he shouldn't be broken down and there's no reason to believe this will get anything but worse as the years wear on.

When the Trib beat writer calls the team out for dogging it on D, it has to be time to let Morgan, Oni, Brantley, Forrest, Hughes and the new signee have some burn.

If Azubuike can get back by mid-April - that could really help the defense in the 2nd unit. He'd be learning still, but the other 4 men on the floor would know exactly what they are doing. He just needs to learn the lesson, that took Rudy a couple of season to figure out - don't jump.

The nice part would be with him in the middle, you would play exactly the same style of defensive you would if Favors or Gobert were there. But, you'd have his 7'7" wingspan patrolling the paint. If nothing else, it would give us 18 fouls to give from the 5 spot.

He probably won't be ready though. Those G-League minutes would have been crucial.

Because the Jazz had no choice but to blow the full MLE on a broken-down player, so they had to select HIS backup when the broken-down player breaks down. That would be as soon as he was better/more trusted than Juwan Morgan.
Ahhh okay now I get it.

A few weeks ago we were talking about how Favor's impact kept the Jazz up, mainly by offensive rebounds and just being solid positionally on defence. He has been faltering but I think the team's defensive effort went down as a whole and he can't no longer make up for it. He isn't minus but the second unit defense has to be much more of a team effort.

And I agree with Cy, Udoka could make plays purely off his athleticism and size for gimmicky 2-3 minutes each half, spell Favors and Gobert while keeping the same identity and covering for poor perimeter defenders.

We really should have seen this coming. Truth is, Favors has probably only had one good season in the last 5 or so years. His play is and has almost always been a reflection of his health and effort, but the norm for Favors is not him being healthy. That was obviously the aberration and the Favors we have now that can't jump is what we should expect.

Having said that, I do think we're dooming just about any backup C in the league with how we play defense. We are so incredibly on the C position, it just doesn't work without Rudy. Even with Rudy the defense can struggle at times. We can't do the 4 traffic cones on the perimeter strategy when he sits. I think Quin is hanging out Favs to dry and it would be much worse with Udoka.

I think Bogey just needs to be better. Stop turning the ball over so much, stop driving into traffic, and give more effort defensively. I don't really think his struggles are injury related, physically he looks fine out there.
Agreed. Bogey is sucking but I don't think he sucks. And he looks fine physically.

Favors kinda sucks though and doesn't look fine physically

If Favors faltering down the stretch is this detrimental to the team then how can we say he isnt a big reason for the best record in the NBA?
He was a part of it but if we are being honest, the reason we are the best team in the league is because we were the best 3 point shooting team in the history of the nba for most of the season.
Favors don't make many 3's

know you are being sarcastic but i'm pretty sure there is no back up to that 3yr full MLE.

if favs breaks down we are screwed either way cuz there is no more picks left we can give to other teams to convince them to take on his money.

why give Favs the full MLE which you know you can't get out of AFTER you drafted Doke?
They trying to win the ring now dude.

They gave Favs money cuz they wanted him to make them better.

They drafted Udoka (I believe, I'm sure there are more reasons as well) because he provided insurance to a center depth chart that has injury concerns. That with his unique combo of vertical explosion and length, he probably gave the Jazz some visions of him being super effective in their offense. For as good as Gobert is at finishing, the guy has very little standstill explosion. Doka just has such outlier tools to be an insane rim finisher. Hopefully his body holds up.

They obviously think the position is more important than the average NBA person.

At the end of the day all that matters is results. If Favors proves to be important factor in the playoffs and helps the Jazz get to the Championship it would be hard to call it an overpay.
