Sleep trouble

I just saw a dozen people or so saying on Reddit how Aleve does wonders for them.

I’m gonna start this tomorrow. Wake up. One tea and one 8 oz coffee. No later than about 1pm. Fluids stop by 5pm. I won’t eat after 7:30pm. And I’ll take an Aleve and a Magnesium pill around 9:30pm.
That wouldn't be the ticket for me. I'm extremely anti taking medicine on a regular basis. I literally take zero medications. Maybe a couple times per year I will take ibuprofen and of course if I get sick then I will take medicine then.

It's crazy how many pills society consumes today. I see people at work with these little pill segregating containers just full of various pills. My wife takes a bunch of crap daily. So do many of my family members.

I'm trying to avoid that for as long as I can.

I 110% agree with you. But sleep is so important. I’m a mess. Have brain fog. And I don’t plan on doing this daily. I just want to experiment once a week this summer with it to see if it seems to help. And that way if I’m running low on sleep during the school year I can do this one night here and there.

What you are describing is called sleep hygiene. Basically establishing a routine before sleep and sticking to it. That's what helped me the most after a lot of what others said above, e.g. nasal surgery, cutting back on caffeine (almost entirely cut it out), don't drink for an hour before bed, etc.

Also, kick the screens to the curb 1-2 hours before bed. Read a real book (not a Kindle, etc.). Talk to the mrs. (Yeah i know but worth a shot anyway). Also be sure to button up any lingering issues you can before going to bed. Don't talk about finances in the hour before bed with your spouse, or any such topics, like where a kid might be struggling or a problem with the neighbor or work issues. Cut those conversations off a couple hours before bed.

Lastly, try meditation. For me I meditate for maybe 15 minutes about an hour before bed in a darkened room. Not pitch black but darker. This has been shown in studies to get natural melatonin flowing.

Also be sure to use the sun to keep your circadian rhythm in sync. Go outside for 10 minutes in the morning to wake up. Try to be outside in the afternoon/evening for a bit while the sun is going down, stuff like that helps your body establish good rhythms.

Good luck brother. I've dealt with so much insomnia it's crazy. It can be very taxing. But you'll figure it out.

Ya sometimes you gotta go with lesser of two evils and I agree, sleep is important enough to try it.

Wow, that's a lot of effort to get sleep, but honestly worth it. Lack of sleep can be debilitating.

When my insomnia hits hard, it's crippling.
This. I have stretches where I will get 6-8 hours in a 3-4 day period. That's bad. That's better-not-drive bad. But I have learned to work with it, and I have had plenty of days I worked through on less than 2-3 hours of sleep. Usually if I cannot get at least 90 minutes, I will just stay up. Our sleep brains tend to run on 90-minute cycles, so if you disrupt your sleep during one of those cycles it is bad. If you happen to wake at the end of one of those cycles it is easier to adjust to. Not that this helps with sleep planning or anything but it is good to know, imo. So if I am not sleeping well, but finally feeling like I am winding down, I will set my alarm in multiples of 90 minutes. So 1.5 hours later, or 3, or 4.5. At least I try to do that and it seems to help. Of course no idea how much is the placebo effect.

As far as pharmaceuticals and supplements go, magnesium never did anything for me. It really only helps if you are already low on magnesium, but otherwise it doesn't do much acutely, it is more systematic. I have had some luck with valerian. Take it an hour before bed, seems to help with relaxation and freeing my brain from the constant stream of thoughts. I have also had luck with chamomile tea. I like to take a triple strength chamomile with my valerian an hour before I go to bed. But it is not perfect, maybe 70% efficacy, enough to stick with it if I am struggling.

But it also cannot be stressed enough to use bed for only 2 things: sleep and sex. Don't watch TV, play on your phone, or even read actually in bed. Get in bed exactly when you are ready to shut out the lights and sleep. Also, white noise helps me a ton. I use alexa to play a skill called "ambient noise". I say "alexa, tell ambient noise to play waterfall" or one of 30+ other sounds. Seems to help.

Something to note here: Don't be afraid to have A glass of water if your thirsty. Just be careful with your intake if you're a habitual water drinker when you're near the kitchen sink. It's an easy habit to fall into and definitely not bad. Just slow it a touch if so.

When you have the heritage of Mexico in you, you live hard and fast.
That is funny, buti should clarify I'm not Mexican. Been there a couple times though. It's a Michael Vick thing. But I've used it forever just as a funny way of saying anonymous. But I can't say my life has been boring.

sleep trouble is no bueno, some physical activity outside in the sun for instance, long hikes, gardening, fishing, wear yourself out and see if that doesn't work. for myself it's the best for sound sleep, mind even will be begging to shut off and sleep.

I figured. It was a riff on a family name more than a genetic or national heritage.

This is true if you're up for it energetically speaking. Problem with insomnia and other sleep conditions is alot of times it doesn't care how active you are. In my case, intense exercise triggers it for me due to increase T cell counts if conducted over multiple days.
