I've been hearing that as soon as you land, your phone gets hack and personal information stolen.

And how is that different from the NSA spying on the German chancellor and phone traffic? At least Russia is like google and you know you're having surceillance on you...

Wonder if things go south, if FIFA will pull the 2018 World Cup!?!??

Nah Russia is paying too much money to make this event happen. #FIFAcorruption

The Olympics don't have to be political. Just saying.

The problem beyond the spying is that during all these NSA revelations, Russia has been pretending they were the true bastion of freedom. They've done that with other issues like religious freedom lately too. It's a big joke. Both countries are moving toward totalitarianism on the big issues.

I'm putting together a Fantasy Olympics game thing with some jazzfanzers, let me know if any of y'all want in.

Okay bastion of freedom? Russia? I don't know a single German who doesn't think that Russia is a modern dictatorship of Putin.

I'm in!

What is your guys favorite competition? I love biathlon. I think it's one of the most skilled and to me the most exciting one. High skill level and practice required to shoot accurately after skiing a couple miles with at least 15 mph. doping also has little influence compared to other competitions due to the impactful shooting part(Domracheva can't shoot). It's a little like formula 1 from the race types(qualification - sprint, single; race - mass start; pursuit also is exciting) , but depending on skills, not computers and engines.
I also like alpine skiing - downhill and slalom the most.
As a kid I was big on ski jumping, but then realized that it's too luck dependant for me. Plus it lacks dynamic.
And I absolutely hate ice hockey.

I do not think the average person think politics when watchin track and field or a ski jump contest.

But then there's those who organize the events and want to represent themselves in human fashion. I just accept that organisators and license distributors like the IOC have angles. I still enjoy the athletes and competitions. But I think it's silly that you start questioning political impact just because it's in Russia. Look at it this way. The USA were involved in the first gulf war from 1980-1988. In 1988 it was decided that the 1996 summer games are taking place in Atlanta? Why would the USA try to get the rights for these games in the middle of a war that impacted their popularity around the world? I'd say to repair reputation globally in the future by showcasing hospitality and stuff. Same for Peking in 2008. Others wanted economical impact like Sydney in 2000. Since then with easier access to travelling/flying Australia has become one of the most popular countries to visit at least in Europe when planning a bigger visit(experience of a lifetime).

edit: Want to add the 1994 FIFA Football World Cup.

Ok fair enough. Not really interested in debating that. Just sad to see everything be political.

Can we make a separate thread for people who want to get all One Brow about the Olympics?

This thread is about snowboarders doing double corks, Canadanns getting merked in hockey, and funny stuff that the Russians failed at building properly.

The Canadians snowboarders are calling out Shaun White for ditching that event. It's so cute when a little brother tries to hang with their older sibling. Silly Canucks.
