What's new

Some random thoughts about our new direction

I apologize if some of this has already been brought up in the myriad posts that we excited Jazz fans have made in the last week and a half or so. Here goes:

1. The Jazz's draft and subsequent trade with Golden State really do put us in a great position to establish our core, let them play, and draft good players in the next few years.

2. The GS trade clears the way for a perfect target in next year's free agent class: Paul George. He has mentioned that he will want a max contract next summer and if Indy doesn't agree, then we might be able to bring him to Salt Lake. He's a great young 3, which we haven't had since David Benoit (I keed, I keed). We will have the money to pay him and I think we should. He could be willing to come to Utah, after already playing for (and thriving with) a small market team. Let's hope that Indy can't or won't afford him. The only way we'll lure him away is by playing decently this season (thus showing our potential for the next few years) and then offering him a max deal.

3. These guys will have a full season to jell and will be interesting to watch, just for the purpose of seeing how these young bucks come together and play as a team.

4. At the risk of losing any support that this thread potentially had up until this point, I will also posit that now would be a great time to trade for Jimmer, assuming the price is right. Keep reading. All SAC has right now is point guards and they just simply don't need him. The Maloofs were high on him but they're not a factor anymore. We have one PG signed and it's unclear whether or not Neto will be able to (FIBA) or ready to back up Trey this coming season. Outside of defensive stats, Jimmer's offensive numbers are quite impressive. He would make a great back-up point, would fill the seats in a rebuilding year, and would provide a solid outside threat to space the floor for our young bigs down low. His defensive liabilities would not be as much of a problem with the front court we now have, as opposed to the front court that just signed elsewhere within the last few days. Jimmer would be a great fit with our young core.

I guess that's it. Like a number of Jazz fans, I am definitely excited to see what these guys can do before they have real chemistry, before the full team is put together, and now that they finally have the chance to get some real playing time.

Boo yah.

Paul George is nice but I wouldn't pay him the max. He is slightly better than Hayward and I think the Jazz can get him for a lot less than the max. Besides if the Jazz are a top 5 team in the lottery than they most likely have a shot at Parker who plays SF. I just think it is too early to be signing Max guys until we know how good are players are going to be. We need to save some $$$$ in order to re-sign our guys too.

If I'm Paul George, I'd tell the Jazz, "No thanks. You could've drafted me instead of Hayward...now live with the consequences"...LOL.

Let's put on our GM caps here and look at two players, shall we?

Player 1 per 36:

17 pts, 7 rebs, 4 assists, 0.5 blk, 2 steals, 42% fg, 36% 3pt, 81% ft, 3 to's

This guy will cost 15 million a year.

Player 2:

17 pts, 4 rebs, 4 assists, 1 blk, 1 steal, 44% fg, 42% 3pt, 83% ft, 2 TO's

Player two will cost you 8 million per year.

What would the smart GM do?

I was just thinking about this the other day. Maybe if we left a flaming bag of pooh on the king's front porch, they'd just give us Jimmer. That sounds like a fair price. Unless we had to pay for the dog food to feed the dog, then I'd have to reconsider.

Ok, ok. Maybe that's a bit unfair. Jimmer would definitely be worth that much, even if we had to buy the most expensive dog food available, and instead of a paper bag or something, we could put the pooh in a designer handbag. Not one of those cheap knockoffs like what Trout gives his wife for their anniversary, but a REAL one.

I don't think that the op was saying to get rid of hayward.... just that he would like the jazz to add george to the roster.

Burke
Hayward/burks
George
Favors
Kanter
Looks pretty good to me

No way Paul George deserves a MAX contract at this point of his career and I highly doubt he will ever be a MAX contract player.

As for the OP, I doubt we'll be in position for any of the top FA's. But we may be able to facilitate teams trying to shed salaries to get or keep those FA's, either doing the same thing we did this summer (expirings + picks) or actually getting a solid rotation player or two. Even with two firsts and new contracts for Favors and Hayward, the Jazz should have almost $20M in cap space.

This is the year where Favors shows what kind of player he is. He's been developed cautiously for 3 seasons and is being given the starting role. He needs to show he can score regularly and anchor the defense. Otherwise, he might become tradable in a deal that gets us another high lotto pick or a better pick in 2014. I'm not hitting the panic button by any means, but now is the time for Favors and Kanter to make this their team -- with three solid passers to feed them the ball.
