Some tidbits from Chad Ford's Chat

Hold on! Who says Milsap wants to re sign with the Jazz? You would hope he does but you never know. The answer to this is the main factor in my decision.

this.

10/11 is a crap shoot, with as many busts and deep bench players (27.5%) as stars (20-25%, depending on what we call a star). paul has been our best player since the DW trade, you don't trade that away for a CHANCE at somebody who is good enough to start.

Millsap has not been our best star player since D-Will. When he's on he is our best player, but his problem is he's too small to be a starting pf and just too big and not enough lateral quickness to play sf on a consistent basis. He breaks down too much and goes weeks where he is completely ineffective, remember the entire month of February.

Anyway he has I think one more year, and I have a feeling he is going to want 12 million $. I'm not sure I want to give him that. Not to mention I'm hoping Kanter makes a big jump this next year. This way we get someone that could be here for 6 to 8 years. We've got lots of cap space coming up and I don't want to use it on someone that should be coming off the bench but probably won't want to.

Millsap is versatile enough that he can still be part of the Jazz's future even if Kanter and Favors live up to the expectations. Millsap can play SF or be the 6th man. I don't see Jefferson being part of the Jazz future if Kanter and Favors prevail, so I would see Jefferson being moved. Unlike they did with Boozer, once the Jazz determine that someone is not part of their longterm plan, they should trade them. They did it with Okur and I could see them doing it with Jefferson over this summer or at the deadline, if they determine that Kanter or Favors are ready (and can also get value).

This. Keep Mansap. Trade Jefferson. I like Favors, Kanter and Paul as our 3 primary bigs. I like the idea of Paul as our sparkplug off the bench, he has proven that he can thrive coming off the bench. It's a huge advantage to have a very good bench player like Mansap.

If KOC knows he can't re-sign Millsap, then trade him. If he knows he can, don't trade him.

The only exception would be if Lillard fell to the 10th pick. I somehow think if Lillard fell to the 10th pick, that pick wouldn't be available anymore, so I don't think it matters.

I am completely against trading Millsap in this scenerio - and this Hornets blogger just about made me sick talking about it...

@hornets247 "And yes, I have heard the Milsap/Burks/47 for Ariza and #10 rumor and I LOVE IT! Or, swap Hayward for Milsap ‪#EitherOr‬"

"When Hornets first landed the top pick, I told Ryan on the podcast that Milsap would be the ideal guy to put next to Davis. Perfect fit"

"Good deal for Utah too. they get Kendall Marshall and Favors some more PT, plus don't have to lose Milsap for nothing"

"Hornets could upgrade at PF, dump Ariza and jump right back into first round and get a similar player. LOVE that deal"

I love when someone says how much they LOVE a deal, but rationalize how good it is for the other team. If the Jazz are trading up to get Marshall, it better not be at the expense of Millsap, and not for a pick higher than 15...

I was on the fence to begin with but after some more reflection, I wouldn't do it. I would try to trade Jefferson for the pick and would even throw in a 2nd if needed, as well as Watson or Tinsley, one of whom they could use--which one of those two is tough for me but I'd lean toward Watson. To be able to unload Jefferson, open up more time for Favors and Kanter, free up money a year early, and get the pick to net Lillard or Marshall would be a heck of an off-season and we'd still likely be looking at our 1st, the Warriors 1st, and a ton of cap room next off-season.

Jefferson (+ our 2nd if necessary) for Portland's #11.

Is Millsap worth 12 mil? If so would the Jazz be willing to pay him that jack to have him come off the bench? And would Millsap be willing to come off the bench if he got his 12 mil?

I have never gotten the impression that Millsap would be willing to come off the bench long term. For that reason I have always considered him expendable because 6th man is where we need him.

I would never do that.

Millsap is not worth 12 million. I would say more like 9 or 10.

Absolutely, unequivocally not if Favors and Kanter are our starting frontcourt in 2013-2014.

I do agree that Millsap has been our best player since the D-Will trade. However, contract negotiations need to be based on projected future value, not past performance. Millsap has been paid handsomely these past few years. Going forward however, it might not be the best fit for either party.

He wants to be a starter, and he is a PF. We already have our PF in Favors, and re-signing Sap to start at the 3 for $12M per makes no sense. You're not going to get $12M/year worth out of Millsap if you're playing him out of position.

I love Paul. I'd love to have him on the team the next 5 years at $8M-$9M a year, coming off the bench as our 6th man to back up Favors and Kanter. I just don't see that being what Paul wants. On the flipside, paying Paul more than he's worth/starting him out of position is not the best use of resources for the Jazz.

I’m not saying I support this trade. I am still working out how I feel about potentially trading Millsap. However, I will say that foresight is an invaluable element of executing a trade, something that is not necessarily reflected in the initial value of a trade.

Millsap + Burks + 47 for the 10 + Ariza seems like a ton (especially w/ Burks. I am equally concerned about losing him). But if we’re only getting one more year out of Paul, and we flip him for Lillard/Marshall who becomes our franchise PG, all of a sudden we’re making out like bandits five years from now.

Trading Millsap is certainly an interesting (and clearly polarizing) possibility.

The more I think on it, the more I believe Millsap won't sign with the Jazz after his contract ends.

I think he will if the Jazz pay him the most. But that'll be more than I'd wanna spend, so get something for him while his value is high.
Dunno why you'd include Burks though.

I would not trade the following for Lillard: Hayward, Favors, Kanter, Millsap.
I would trade the following for Lillard: anything else.

It would have to. Be a very good deal to trade millsap and lillard or Marshall are not it. We would have to get something good back also. I could see the jazz targeting t jones at 10 or 11.

I'm not sure that I'd trade Burks for Marshall.

This is a tough one. Burks is a somewhat proven commodity. BUT, Lilliard can shoot. That would be a tough call.

I would not trade Millsap for #10. Millsap is a very good starter, and in a couple of years when Kanter develops, Millsap perfectly slides to the bench and because an amazing bench player. Millsap, Kanter and Favors fit together perfectly.
