Somebody explain Derrick Williams love to a Jazz Fan

Dwill2 is the PERFECT SF for the Jazz and here is why...

-He is very athletic and a great defender...doesnt foul

-Great hands and a great rebounder

-Amazing shooter

-his biggest weakness is that he's not the best ball handler..but here is why thats OK...the Jazz offense is dominated by the pg and the bigs....so when there are double teams he is perfect for getting open and nailing the outside jumpers. Yet he can still drive in and finish at the rim. He is still young so he can still develop a jumpshot off the dribble and improve in his ball handling skills.

I dont know about great defender, I think that is the biggest (really the only) ? with him playing the 3.

my roommate is an arizona alum so I watched the Wildcats play over thirty times in teh last two years.

And this guy is just can't miss. Worst case scenario, we're talking a better version of Beasley. Best case scenario is Paul Pierce.

Williams actually reminds me a lot of Pierce, because they both kinda played a lot of power forward in college. And they both have really great body control.

Williams has an incredible first step, and his ball handling skills show potential even though they need work. His jumpshot has a slow release, but its very accurate. And this is something he added to his game over the summer.

The really impressive thing about Williams is that he's an incredibly hard worker. I've never seen a college basketball player improve like that in two years. He played a good portion of last season with a brace over his strong hand, and during that time he showed off his ability to do things with his off hand.

He's a competitor and a hard worker and his teammates love him. It's somewhat rare to see all three at the college level.

Also, the comparison to millsap is very superficial. There's a reason Williams is going top three and Millsap went in the second round. Derrick Williams is much much quicker and more explosive than Millsap and has much more advanced shooting and ball handling. Think more like Danny Granger than Paul Millsap.

Awesome. I feel better about him after hearing this. Either Kanter or Willaims, at 3 the Jazz can't miss.

That's how I feel. If the Jazz get Kanter, I'll feel good knowing we'll never have to see a guy like Elson ever again. Someone always gets hurt for at least a few games so I'm not worried about playing time for Favors, Jefferson, Millsap, Okur and Kanter. Under that scenario, Millsap probably plays 10-15 mins at SF. He could handle the position against backup SF's. That would leave Utah with CJ as a starter for one more season, but a deal could always be made near the deadline (Okur or CJ's expiring). Or the Jazz just wait to use GS' pick on a small forward. Or maybe a SF like Leonard drops or Singleton or Honeycutt impresses enough to move up. If not, then I'm not dead set against Fredette at #12, or maybe Burks is still available.

It seems that everyone is concerned about Williams being a tweener.... He is a great athlete and a great BBall player. The team that drafts him will find a way to use his talents in a productive way. being a tweener has both drawbacks and possibilities. If he is too big and strong to be guarded by most SF's, and/or too quick to be guarded by PF's... Wouldn't a good coaching staff be able to find a way to use that to create mismatches?

Yes, I know it goes both ways, and he has to guard the other guy too, but I think you take the best overall Basketball player, and find away to fit him into your team. If Williams is available at the 3rd pick, it is likely to be him. Passing on the best player because of position scarcity feels a bit awkward to me.

I guess the risk is that he's a tweener like Marvin Williams, who hasn't had much of an impact after being picked #2 by Atlanta. They're both about the same size. IF D. Williams turns into a 12/5 player and isn't a real force at either the 3 or 4, that would be pretty disappointing. I don't think that happens, though. Derrick has had far better seasons in college than the year Marvin had. Worst case, I think, Williams could be a dominant force off the bench, just like Millsap used to be. I'm just hoping Cleveland takes Irving. I'd rather have the Jazz get Kanter or Williams vs. taking Irving. Decent PG's can generally be found lower in the draft. Maybe not this draft, but there will probably be some decent ones available with the GS pick.

Marvin isn't really skilled and he isn't really athletic.

I agree. Next year has a lot of great options at the wing.

I agree here too. Although if the Jazz had a chance at Irving I don't know that I could pass on him. I might though. I guess if Irving falls to 3 the Jazz take him. But yeah, I think I'd rather have one of the other two. I'm also not done with Biyombo yet. He's still got me spellbound. One of those 4 will be there at 3.

Let me clarify. If Irving fell to the Jazz at pick 3 I don't think I could pass on him. He's that good. And the thing is, on principle I hate drafting PGs with such high picks since 1) there are decent enough ones to be had in the teens and 20s, and 2) elite PGs don't necessarily equal championships. Give me someone like Rondo, selected at pick 21, over an exciting and expensive top pick. But yeah, Irving's really good so I don't know if I could pass on him. If the Jazz got the top pick I'd have to think it thru but since they don't, and so won't have a chance at Irving, I don't have to worry about it. I can just focus on Kanter, Dwill2, and Biyombo.

Am I crazy? That's not relevant.

Top picks arent expensive. And where are all these good PG's that arent drafted in the lottery?

Top picks ARE expensive - I'm not talking monetarily. Think of how hard it is to come by a top pick. You tank the entire season and some team with a way better record wins the top pick with only a 2% chance. Maybe I should've said top picks are RARE.

I cited Rajon Rondo, who in 2006 was drafted with pick 21.

I say "expensive" but what I mean is they're really rare and hard to come by. So I don't like to spend them on PGs since you can find guys like Rondo at 21.

Use those rare picks on rare commodities. PGs aren't rare, and to win you don't need an elite one anyway.

This is my opinion. You disagree. We're still friends.

I've also wondered where these late 1st round pg's that every team has have been hiding. For every Rondo there are 5 CP3's, Roses, Dwill's, Westbrooks etc.

If Williams falls to the Jazz, the Jazz have to take him. I'd also be interested in taking a defensive three, Singleton, at 12. That leaves:

Harris/FA PG/FA PG
Hayward/Miles/Bell
Williams/Singleton
Millsap/Favors/Evans
Jefferson/Okur

Hopefully Bell will be in a suit.

If we did that we would looking to make a trade. We need some more guards.

I think it should be noted how much Williams has improved his game. Not just in college, but since high school. He was the sixth man on his high school team as a sophomore, wasn't really on the radar as Division 1 prospect as a senior (he was ranked 72nd overall prospect, 25th positional prospect as a PF on ESPN Recruiting), and now he is a potential number 1 overall pick. If he can continue improving at this pace, he will be scary good. I don't see any reason to think he won't continue improving either.

Jeez, I wish everyone would stop including Miles in their rotation predictions. He sucks. Please don't bring that hack back.
