What's new

speaking of gordon chiesa...

Good for him. He always has good basketball insight, but stumbles badly as he tries to get the right words out.

All the best to him. I certainly have appreciated his pre- and post-game comments much more than those of Coach Nissalke.

congrats dawg. Go show 'em your enthusiasm.

I like Chiesa... but the real point here is... what the.... Jacque Vaughn is a HC?
I hope he is paying Chiesa half his salary if he makes it through the season.

Vaughn is the head coach of basically an expansion team. Orlando got back nothing in the Howard trade.

How many games will a lineup with projected starters of Ayon (or Vucevic), Afflalo, Nelson, G. Davis and Turkoglu win?

Orlando may have hired Vaughn because they know he won't inspire the team to overachieve. I know Charlotte was absolutely horrid last season, but the Bobcats should see some progress from Walker and get a boost from MKG. It will be quite a battle for worst between those two teams, IMO.

vaughn has been a highly respected assistant coach for several years, so i'm not sure why it's surprising that he is a HC now. dude definitely paid his dues.

*a few
*has paid dues, but not as much as almost anyone in the league

Orlando's tanking. HARD. That's the only reasonable explanation for getting the package they got for Dwight and hiring Vaughn (though, not in that order).

your post insinuates that vaughn must suck as a coach. i'm wondering where you are drawing that conclusion. is it because he was an average-at-best player? i'm thinking that's not it, because you're a smart guy and you can look around the league and see plenty of good coaches who were mediocre in their playing days (or who never played at all). so why are you assuming that vaughn is a terrible coach and that it must be part of orlando's concerted plan to suck hind teat?

and ok, you're right... he was only an assistant coach officially for two seasons, but he did player development work before that. he is highly respected around the league and comes with the stamp of approval of one of the best coaches in this generation, pop. i'm sure he'll have a lot to learn, which is why he's hiring assistants and retaining the counsel of a veteran coach. i just don't think they hired him because he is awful.

I'm arriving at the conclusion that most NBA head-coaches suck. There are a small handful that continually get work as head coaches, and the rest suck. Experience is important, and most new coaches suck. He's easily the greenest HC in the NBA. The conclusion I am arriving at is Orlando wants to give themselves a good shot to be terrible and have a scapegoat. On the off-chance that Vaughn is actually quite good, then great. Win-win for them.

Maybe he could the black Scott Brooks.
