For the Jazz, what has already been the most tumultuous season in more than two decades doesn’t seem to want to end smoothly. Utah has lost six straight to push new coach Tyrone Corbin’s record to 5-16 since taking over for Jerry Sloan in February, and players have already expressed frustration with Corbin.
Now, Corbin is wrestling with the notion of giving more playing time to Utah’s young players, which will mean scaling back the minutes of veterans like Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap. On Monday before the Jazz played the Wizards in Utah, Corbin expressed his desire to avoid playing three rookies—Derrick Favors, Gordon Hayward and Jeremy Evans—at the same time.
But in the fourth quarter, with the Jazz trailing by 10, Corbin went with a lineup of the three rookies plus point guard Ronnie Price and swing man C.J. Miles. That lineup whittled the lead down and got the Jazz into overtime, when Corbin took the unusual step of starting the extra period with all three rookies.
Millsap and starting point guard Earl Watson returned in overtime, but Jefferson—who was removed with 54 seconds to go in the third quarter—did not return to the game. The Jazz lost, 100-95, giving the Wizards just their second road win of the season.
“We’ll see where we are,” Corbin said in his postgame press conference. “The young guys, I like their energy. If they’re gonna go and play hard, I think they’ll push everybody else to come along, if that’s what the case is.”
But Jefferson, for one, was not happy about remaining on the bench for the game’s final 17 minutes. According to a report in the Salt Lake Tribune, Jefferson at one point sat three seats from his nearest teammate, and exited the arena without talking to reporters.
