Stats For The Big 7 Thru 2 Preseason games

cool stats but i wonder efficiency numbers more. Kanter made double double but really played poor at last match etc.

Those assists numbers are horrid considering Quin's preached ball movement and unselfishness more than anything else. I've not watched the games but I wonder if that's a reflection on Burke who to me is more of a pure half court offense type of guy, one who really has the ball in his hands a lot to be effective type of guy.
 
In the two games, we've held the Blazers to a combined 40.5% fg percentage. Excluding individual player growth, this may be the most important to me this season--clear growth in our team defense. It's just two games and it's the pre-season but it's encouraging.

I'd like to see us be top 15 team in team defense this year in pp100p, dfg%, and ppg.

Defense was the thing that jumped out at me the most in the 2 scrimmages that I went to. The defense was very very good both times.

Trey and Alec have looked much better defensively this year every time I have seen them.
Keep in mind that corbin was their coach for every minute that any of those 3 have played in the nba. I always though that burks biggest issues defensively were fixable (getting lost at times, ball watching, picking up his man way beyond the three point line, being horrible when a pick comes)

Trey and kanter are both more limited physically but I have seen trey play in both scrimmages, all the summer league games, and one pre-season game and trey seems to be a totally different player defensively than he was under corbin.

Also don't forget gobert will be getting a decent chunk of minutes too

It has been only two pre-season games against a team whose coach made winning secondary to seeing what his scrubs can do. Still, the Blazers weren't able to run the lay-up drills that were so common against last year's team. That gives me hope that our guards are playing better defense under Quin.

You understand the Blazer's bench, who have one of the worst benches in the NBA, were playing a lot during the game while we were basically playing what will be our regular season rotation

Also, no Damian Lillard at all in the 2nd game.

Reserved optimism.

Exactly. And, for the Jazz, preseason means something. For most other teams with established players, preseason is nothing more than extended practice.

In the first game at least, they had lillard and thier starting lineup was -14

Hayward has 14 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 4 apg, 3 spg, 55% FG, 58% 3s, 91% FTs in 27 mpg.

Favors has 14.4 ppg, 7 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1 bpg, 1 spg, 55% FG, 66% FT in 23.8 mpg

Kanter has 10 ppg, 7 rpg, 1 apg, 40% FG, 8% 3s, 66% FTs in 26 mpg.

Gobert has 7.6 ppg, 9.4 rpg, 1.4 bpg, 65% FG, 70% FTs in 20.6 mpg.

Hood has 8.5 ppg, 4 rpg, 1.5 apg, 56.5% FG, 45% 3s, 50% FTs in 24.75 mpg. (4 games)

Burks has 17.6 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 1.6 apg, 2 spg, 50% FGs, 68% FTs, 0% 3s (2 attempts) in 32 mpg (3 games)

Burke has 15 ppg, 3 rpg, 6 apg, 1 spg, 46% FGs, 50% 3s, 58.6% FTs in 29.6 mpg (5 games)

Exum has 7.6 ppg, 1.6 rpg, 3 apg, 41% FGs, 41% 3s, 84.6% FTs in 22.6 mpg.

Glaring things to me:

Kanter has made one 3 in 12 attempts.

The Jazz collectively need to work on their FT%. Terrible.

Jazz have 4 of the above guys shooting over 40% on threes.

Gobert is the leading rebounder despite having less time than anyone on this list.

Hayward is crazy right now. Averaging 14 ppg on 8 shot attempts per game. Look at thos %s...

What are your thoughts?

A few things stand out.

40% FGs for Kanter is unacceptable and 7 rebs is pedestrian - for a guy looking for a contract, he has to be better than that.

Burks lack of three point attempts - IMO, Burks has been fantastic (18 ppg on 50%), so it's a pit nitpicky, but if he can start shooting threes and make 35-37% of them, he could put up 20 ppg this season without much problem - 22 ppg might be more likely. With 3 pointers being a legit weapon in his arsenal, he'd be an unstoppable force.

Gober gets attention as a rim protector because of of his size, wingspan and that he's a pretty good shot-blocker, but he's a can't miss young guy because he's an elite rebounder. The shot blocking is nice, but rebounding is where his bread is buttered.

Hood, after being inconsistent in SL with his shooting has been much more consistent and that is encouraging. Was never a huge concern, as I'd seen him enough at Duke to believe he was a consistenly good shooter, but it's nice to see regardless.

If Burke puts up similar numbers to those above - say 15-17 ppg, 46% FGs, ~40% 3pt with 6-7 assists, the Jazz will win a lot of games this season. Maybe even get to .500. It's a big if, but would be huge for this team.

Thoughts:

Hayward and Favors are clearly our 2 best players. There is no question about it and our team will, in large part, do as good as they do on a night-to-night basis. If we can find that quick 4 who can knock down the corner 3, I think this offense will reach it's peak.

Burks is our best scorer, but not sure his points really help the team as much as other's do. Also, Burks really only has 1 3pt attempt because his 1st one last game was a last second shot clock heave, I believe. It's weird that he takes less 3's in Quin's offense than he did in Corbin's. Still not sure he is a fit for Quin's half-court offense (can he use a pick? can he shoot 3's? 2 biggest staples of Quin's halfcourt for wing players), but he will benefit from the emphasis on transition.

Kanter made his 1st 3 of the preseason, check your stats. Kanter sucks in Quinn's offense though. He isn't quick enough to play the 4 spot with Quin on the perimeter and he isn't good enough at defense to play the 5 in place of Favors, where he would probably look best offensively.

Booker is quick enough, just needs to keep working on that 3 ball.

Burke may establish himself as the 3rd best player ahead of Burks this year if he keeps this play up.

Those are pretty valuable too.

-Gobert's line is insane. And you can top off his stat's with a little attitude as well. When was the last time you saw that from a Utah big?

-Hayward is getting a lot more good looks in QS's system. In the 4 games I watched this season I think I counted 1 or 2 off-balance 22 foot jumpers from Hayward - which was a hallmark of last season.

-One thing you can tell with Hood is his mind is racing a hundred miles a minute when he's at the free throw line. Same thing when he's in the open court on defense - although that might have had to do with guarding a Dukie legend in Redick and then Kobe. Both very fixable - he'll learn to relax with time.

-Loving Exum's learning arc. High praise from Doc means something. Just have to be patient.

-I've never been more excited about Trey after his performance in LA against The Clippers. I have wonder where he's been hiding that game

-It's so frustrating to watch Kanter sometimes.

I agree that Burks "and 1"s are also important.
If Hayward averages 18-22 ppg on 50% FG and 40+ 3% while having a 5 rpg and 5 apg then I am thrilled with him.
Exum, Gobert and Hood are learning fast.
Love Goberts attitude. I want the whole team to have it. Not just Gobert and Booker.

Thrilled with this team
 
Really, outside of kanter there is nothing not to like from this team so far

Kanter will come around..... He is a slower learner and slower starter
