What's new

Stephen Hawking has died...

rest in peace. heaven/re-birth whatever it is, I hope he enjoys walking/running....
Pretty sure he's just dead.

Reality sucks, especially in times like this. But let's not insult the memory of a person who didn't believe in an afterlife by pretending things are now better for him because he's dead. They're not. He's dead.

really ?? I mean he was good at maths but ..
But he was no princess? WTF gives a **** about Diana? She was against land mines. Good for her. I have no idea who he's talking about when he says Michael. Is he talking about the pop-star pedophile?

Hey Michael Hutchence wasn't a pedo ... he rooted anything that walked

I'm not educated enough to truly speak on Hawking but I read a Brief History of Time when I was younger and concluded he's gotta be the most qualified person to ever to write such a lofty book for us layman..

I have read a ton of non-fiction... and IMO that book just oozes master-class craftmanship..

and it sold SO many damn copies.. just the fact alone that this dude could sell that many books on that sort of subject matter is legendary..

RIP

I read many of his works... I think pet cemetery was my favorite. Sad day.

Bullet sure loves to ruin everybody else's parties. He might not believe in evil or God, but who the hell is he to tell anyone else what to do or say or think.

I liked Hawking regardless of his opinions or lack thereof. Anyone who will decide to make the most of such a physically limited life has got to be celebrated. He was oh 80% dead all his life for all he couldn't do, so I wouldn't be surprised if he can still do more than most of us if he is 100% dead and done.

My best imagined theory of everything is all about continuity of Life. I think we lived pretty well, thank you, without any physical abilities before we were born here, and I think we will live on pretty well, thank you, for whatever reprieve we may get from our little physical disabilities when we move on.

I like my ideas enough I'm glad to share them, but I have no proof to offer, and I wouldn't want anyone to be obligated to comply or agree necessarily. You have to do your own living, and you should do your own thinking, even your own believing.

You like to see things from your point of view. That's cool, that's how things work.

Do you see how non-believers are being told what to do, say and think when someone asserts that a physically handicapped person is now in a better place because they are dead? Religious people say what they think, I say what I think, then babe comes in telling me I'm ruining the party.

Okay.

But now let's look at the contradiction. Hawkings didn't believe in an all-powerful, all-knowing, all-present, invisible, creator being. According to popular mythology that means he's not in a better place, he's been sent to the supernatural torture chamber where his flesh will burn for all time and eternity.

You can't have it both ways. If you want to be scared of the boogeyman you have to accept that people get sent to the boogeyman when they don't follow the invisible sky daddy's rules. Chief among those rules is belief in and obedience to the invisible sky daddy.

Put your faith in the SkyCaddie, not the sky daddy.

If it comforts some people to believe that spirits go to a better place after death I don't see a problem with that. If some people believe that such a place could not possibly exist because there is no evidence of that I don't see a problem with that either. No matter what happens to us after this life, it's easily proven that each of us live this life according to the rules of a reality that we individually create (although most of us never realize this). Our personal rules make all the difference. Some people live every day in a hell that they have unwittingly created for themselves. Others live in heaven, despite having endured all sorts of trauma and pain. These are choices that are ours to make.

You're mad at Babe because he did to you exactly what you did to the guy you quoted.

JTT,

can you own up to your own faith and admit that if your mythology is real then Stephen Hawkings is burning in hell right now?

GF,

I don’t see a problem with what was said. Yes, Hawking didn’t believe in heaven or God or an afterlife (I’m trusting you here) but that doesn’t mean one doesn’t exist and that if Hawking were to discover this, he wouldn’t embrace it.
