......you HAVE to give Nash the nod as the second best Point Guard EVER in NBA history! He continues to put up big numbers, has moved to number 2 on the all-time career assist totals, and he scores more points than his closets rival. Magic Johnson is NOT in this equation. Didn't play long enough and his career totals are not close to the top. Yes, he won 5 championships, but he did it on the coattails of Kareem, argue-ably the BEST NBA player to ever play the game. Nash is the second best Point Guard in NBA history. End of discussion!

....correction, I was wrong. Nash is still 6th on all-time career assist totals. But he should end up 4th before it's over. I just checked the totals and was amazed that he wasn't higher. Stockton's totals are so over the top that it's MIND BOGGLING! I forgot about Jason Kidd......who is not nearly the shooter Nash is.

Magic is in the debate obviously and I think the best ever. As for the arguement that he did it on kareem, well Stockton had Karl malone the #2 all time scorer. I bet he gave more then a few assists...

I'd say:
1. Magic
2. Stockton

If you are going to troll at least make it on better topics so it is more entertaining for me to respond. I do not mind your schtick if you put the effort into it. Stop with this half assed crap.

Tripple-doubles don't come from riding on coattails.

I say Stockton it the best "point guard" only out of blind homerism, But Magic Johnson is easily one of the best basketball players of all time. I couldn't really argue with someone who'd throw him in their top 5.

Wait riding Kareem's coattails? How many championships did Kareem have until Magic showed up? 1 in Milwaukee. Magic comes along in 1980 and they win it in 1980,82,85,87,88. Not discounting Kareem but to say Magic didn't put them way over the top is laughable.

Magic was never on an NBA team that won LESS than 54 games in a season and was on 6 teams that won 60 or more. Incredible. 5 championships, 2 NBA MVPs, 3 NBA Finals MVPs (riding Kareems coattails). Highest assists per game in NBA history 11.2/game.

Magic is the best PG ever and top 10 player all time easily. Nash and Stockton are great but not up to Magic's level.

...never on a championship team that Kareem wasn't also on!

...and Stockton was never on a championship team despite having arguably the best PF in the history of the league to assist him.

I despise the Lakers. No, I take that back...I HATE the Lakers. But Magic was the best PG ever. Not only was he a PG, but he could play any position on the court. IINM, he actually started a game at center in the playoffs. No PG in the league could match up against Magic due to his size and strength. Stockton may have been the poster boy for the "pass-first" PG and a model citizen, but Magic was unequaled. Yes, he played fewer seasons. But that doesn't diminish his legacy, just as Jordan playing baseball for 3 years doesn't take away from his. Place Stockton either #2 or #3 (depending on where you put Oscar Robertson).

If I remember correctly he also played every position at some point in that same game.

Magic is not my favorite guy, but even I say you are really reaching.
Kareem's production had been dropping every year at that point, especially for the last 3. The last 2 his production had dropped by quite a bit.
Why didn't more people ride Kareem's coattails to championships before that when he was scoring in the 30's per game and pulling down anywhere from 12 to 17 boards a game?
The idea that Magic rode anyone's coattails is an ignorant argument.
He did have some really good players for teammates, but he was always the best player on the floor.

Watching vintage games on NbaTV I was shocked to see how horrible Magic was at defense. He was great on the offensive end but I wonder in this era of scoring points how badly he would get lit up.

Magic has 138 triple-doubles, second only to Oscar. He has 30 playoff Triple-Doubles, second to no one. Is a guy who gets so many triple-doubles riding on other people's coattails, or are they riding on his?

Did you ever watch Stockton try to guard Kevin Johnson, Tim Hardaway, Isiah Thomas, etc.? How would he do against the point guards of today?

CJ, do me a favor and post your ten best players ever. I'm just curious.

My guess:

1) Larry Bird
2) John Stockton
3) Jerry West
4) Pete Maravich
5) Rick Barry
6) Dirk Nowitzki
7) Steve Nash
8) Detlef Schrempf
9) Chris Mullin
10) Arvydas Sabonis

No way does he pick Sabonis. Commie. I'd say George Mikan and Bob Pettit make the list somewhere.
