Suggestions on Books to Read

On a separate note, I recently read Never Let me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. Anyone read it? If not, it's great. That narrator's stoicism blew me away.

Love those games. Didn't know they had novels. Sucks to hear that the translation is sub-par, but I'll give em a look.

Well, if you liked the games you should read it. Storyline is different (I haven't played TW3 yet) but the atmosphere and the tone of the characters are pretty much thr same.

TW3 is by far the best in the series! Best side quests I've ever seen.

I am desperate to find a single good high fantasy series. Something like GoT. Sophisticated and interesting for the adult reader. Is there such a thing? After the colossal disappointment that was Wheel of Time, a friend whose opinion I value recommended Kingkiller Chronicles. Unfortunately, that one suffered from much of the same ****. A 15 year old boy who's the best at everything. He's the best singer ever, he's the strongest at magic, he's unmatched in his intellect, and he's just so beautiful. Rulers world wide summon him to help them find wives and manage their lives! What nonsense.

colton perhaps? Anyone?

Have you tried Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson? It's probably my favorite series I've read in the past 5 years. Sanderson's "Stormlight Archive" (first book: Way of Kings) is also really good, but is unfinished with book 4 coming out this week I think.

But I might not be the best to ask. I liked Wheel of Time a lot, and while I thought Game of Thrones started off great it rapidly got too violent and too sexual for my tastes so I stopped reading after about book 3.

One fantasy series with a ton of depth that breaks the mold is Book of the New Sun.

Only one I can think of. And it's not high fantasy.

Aha. How about the Black Company series by Glen Cook?

Some other things worth considering:

A year or two ago I went through the Garrett P.I. books, also by Glen Cook. They are COMPLETELY different than the Black Company books, like so much it's hard to believe they are by the same author. But also quite enjoyable. The Black Company books are dark fantasy, sometimes very dark. The Garrett P.I. books are light fantasy written as film noir detective stories in a fantasy setting, basically.

Ah, here's another series that I find amazing: the Steven Brust "Vlad Taltos" books that start with Jhereg. I love, LOVE, those books. :-) I also equally love Brust's Khaavren Romances series (starts with "The Phoenix Guards"), which are basically an homage to The Three Musketeers (which I also love). But the Khaavren books may not be for everyone... he intentionally uses an overly wordy style that I find hilarious but which judging from reviews isn't everyone's taste. But I think everyone will love the Vlad Taltos books.

As far as books I *don't* recommend, I just gave up on Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell which was highly rated by some. I got 100 pages into it and just didn't care enough to continue, so I stopped reading.

Decided I'll read Mistborn. :)

Great! Just a warning--don't stop after the first book in the trilogy (The final empire). Don't get me wrong, it's a great book, but reads like fairly traditional fantasy albeit with a pretty interesting magic system. But in book 2 (The well of ascension) and book 3 (The hero of ages), the plot expands geometrically and you realize that the events in book 1 were just scratching the surface of what's going on.

Gentlemen ******* Series by Scott Lynch is already being listed as one of the best fantasy series of all time (first book came out in 2006). It's not really fantasy IMO, but it's a great read. It's raunchily hilarious.

******* (think Jon Snow) is censored, too. WTF?

I prefer my cursing (not cussing) to be more wholesome, you son of a pitchfork. BTW, I've told my kids in essence basically the same thing about cussing that you said a few years back: don't do it around people who will get offended, and that might even be me because your mom is present.
