Summer 2019 Roster Discussion

He is a very interesting case. He only got a full MLE deal last summer. I feel like NOLA or his home town Dallas will be willing to spend the most.

If we got him, I would try to lowball Rubio or go for a similar bench quality PG like Beverley, Bradley, Lin, etc. I have a lot of faith in O'Neale and some in Exum.

We’d have to waive Rubio’s caphold... so he’s gone in this scenario.

I like Randle but I'm really iffy on the fit between him and Gobert. I know he's improved as a 3pt shooter but if the price tag for him is 20 mil a year and his 3pt shot stays around 35% I don't think that's going to make the Jazz certified contenders, and his FT% suggests that there isn't much improvement on that end to be made. I also have questions about how a Randle type player would work in a slower, more methodical offense that the Jazz have been know to run. But the upside is clearly there, and the idea of Randle just running wild on opposing benches in the Favors backup C role while also being able to fill the stretch 4 in the starting lineup is very tantalising.

I feel like you could get Bobby Portis on a much cheaper deal and he could do about 80 - 85% of what Randle does, but unfortunately he's a RFA so Washington probably match. Randle at like $15 mil a year is a much better sell.

If we had a legit power forward that shot 35% from 3 on volume shooting it would open things up in a significant way for the Jazz. Someone made the point earlier in the thread that Randle has been improving in places that aren't known for player development... maybe he becomes an even better player in Utah?

I have a feeling he is going to be a very good player for a while. He has the work ethic which leads to improvement over time. The Pelicans and Lakers have been messes he has thrived in. With us, he would be able to be the 2nd option on offense while learning to grow better at D.

I mean you're not wrong as even Jae Crowder's 33% opens things up, it's more the price tag that makes me hesitant. If we're spending $20+ mil on a player then to me he has to be a guy that puts the Jazz over the top into contenders range, and I'm just not sure Randle does that.

He could continue developing even further so it's entirely possible, and again I do like Randle. If you could knock even a few mil per year off that contract it becomes much more sellable to me.

I'm really not sure that Randle being your #2 offensive option is a good idea either but I do like that he gives the Jazz a different look offensively.

With Randle I don't think you could project him to be a good 3 point shooter... he might get better... I mean 35% with some increased volume would be great. He can make a play with the ball in his hands, so I think some of his lack of shooting could be negated. He can also shift to the backup center role... we will give up a lot of points when that happens, but might be able to outscore opposing benches.

The fit isn't perfect with Rudy on offense... but I think it is better. If you add a shooter with DM and Joe on the perimeter they could just be a shooter and not as much of a playmaker... since Randle provides that.

I just think he's a worker. I like guys that get better every year and he's done that. There might be more there to uncover.

So what do you guy's think is going to happen with Favors and Rubio? Both back next season, neither back next season, Favors back but Rubio gone, Rubio back but Favors gone, what do you think?

Such a shame that Portis got traded, I was thinking that you could pry Portis from the Bulls with an offer sheet and get yourself a really good backup C option that can also play a bunch of PF minutes before the deadline but I really don't see WAS giving him up. He'd almost exactly the kind of guy you'd want to replace Favors with in his current role.

I mean per 100 possessions he scores 32 pts per... same as Donovan, but Randle does it on a ridiculous 61% TS%. More volume than Tobias Harris... and at the same TS%. They are very different guys obviously and there is value to having to stay closer to Harris. I have some concerns on offense, but would be more concerned on defense.

He's so bad on defense though.

I think they’ll be pressured to do something different and the things that they want to do won’t be realistic options, so I expect a trade for Kevin Love. If Rubio signs somewhere else then that increases odds of keeping Favors, but I don’t know what other move we make in that scenario.

I mean Blake Griffin developed the three pointer after his age 26 season... It wouldn't be unheard of for Randle to go from 34% on 2.2 attempts to 35-36% on 4-5 attempts per game. Not likely, but in the realm of possibility. If he unlocked that he's gonna be an absolute monster to deal with.

I'd rather throw 4/100 at Randle then trade for Love.

You could probably talk Randle into only having to take those shots when playing the 4, and let him be the bull in the china shop when he plays the 5 with the bench unit.

I'm starting to come around a little but I'd definitely try not to give him $20 mil a year, a bit less would be ideal.
