Summer League Thread

What foreign domestic league is consistently producing NBA talent without bust/disappointments?

If Keyonte George decided he wanted to play in the French League instead of Baylor would he suddenly not be a good NBA prospect?
That is the entire point genius.

You are sorely mistaken. Hayes played two years in the French A league before getting drafted. Yabusele played multiple years in the French A League as well. Sekou did as well and he was the 15th pick. You are also forgetting Timothe Luwawu who was the 24th pick who played there as well.
They were not drafted off their play in the French league. They were drafted predominantly off their international play and their last seasons before being drafted. Hayes played more for his German team in the 2019-2020 season than he did in France for the previous 2 years combined. You are right about Yabusele. I corrected myself above. Sekou I counted above already. TLC played in Serbia before coming to the NBA. In the year before that he played for the B team and for the youth team of Antibes and played a grand total of 23 minutes for the 1st team of Antibes.

Stating the recent draft history from a certain league is not racist. If you don't think its relevant, then fine.

I would quibble with the sample size thing... the sample size itself is small... but the fact that the league hasn't pumped out a big volume of prospects is kinda relevant. Then the ones it has produced have struggled/disappointed. Wemby should change that.

Making definitive judgements based on summer league is not great... an indirect thing that crossed my mind with regard to Dean's comp did kinda stick with me. The thing with Bilal is his uniqueness (body and athleticism) and I get it... but I still struggle with upside unless he's some amazing creator. I think he fits more with guys like Walsh... and Walsh may be more limited as he isn't that kind of athlete... but I think both guys will likely end up having their ceiling set by how far they get with their shooting. Projecting Bilal as a ball in hand guy... and a shooter... well there is some upside there... but he hasn't shown enormous potential on either front yet.

IDK... I am good if I never see a Bilal debate here for a year or two because its all guesswork at this point.

Nobody cares lol. It was clearly posted as a joke because you like to call people racist and xenophobic as a last resort when you’re losing an argument.
I call people xenophobic when they put out xenophobic ideas.

If you have actual working knowledge of the French league and what about it uniquely produces bust at a higher level compared to other domestic leagues I'm willing to listen.

You don't know tho and all you got is "French league bad".

I argued against this **** with OTE and I'll argue against it with this too. Don't blame you being wrong on a league. Talent is talent. You can either identify it or you can't. If something about a league tricked you (these leagues do tend to have their separate styles of play and if you understand that and actually know the league you can make more informed decisions/analysis, but those aren't static conditions you can base off a draftee that got picked 5 years ago), figure it out and do better next time.

Killian Hayes
Sekou Doumbouya
Theo Maledon
Frank Ntilikina
Elie Okobo
Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot
Guerschon Yabusele
Damien Inglis

All players who played in the French A league and were drafted in the top-34 since 2014.

Killian Hayes definitely did play in the French A League.

He did play in French League. But the last year he played in Europe was in Germany. And he played more there than the two previous years combined. Where do you think he was scouted most?

There are not really that many. Especially in the area of the draft where you would expect really high return. There are Hayes and Frank in the lottery... Ousmane Dieng... but Dieng and Hayes didn't even play in the French league before coming to the NBA. Dieng was in Australia/NZ and Hayes played in Germany. If you want to expand it a bit to the 1st round - Sekou Doumbouya is another one that seems like a bust. Yabusele played in China before coming to the US, TLC played in that pink team from Serbia...

In general since Gobert there have been 3 French players picked in the lottery, only one of them played in the French league immediately before coming to the NBA(Frank). If you expand it to the 1st round you have 6 French players total and only 2 of them played in the French league before coming to the NBA. The sample is really NOT very large.

There's been 3 guys who have come direct from the French League into the NBA that have been drafted in the lottery in the last 15 years. 2 of them are this year. If you're not drafted in the lottery you're not a massive bust because more of those guys fail than succeed anyways. But sure, if Hayes that's a whopping 2 players if you move the goalposts. Thinking about that makes me laugh though lol. Like the act of playing in the French League at some point is what makes you overrated. It's a TRAP!!!! Hayes was drafted because of what he did at Ulm, but ok lol. The instant you step on the court in the LNB Pro league you are done for.

At the end of the day, what do Bilal and Frank/Hayes have to do with each other because they are French? They are not similar players and they were not drafted high for the same reasons. It's simply not a basketball argument, and as much as I like Bilal it's not hard at all to make a basketball argument against him. If you're stooping to "French league poison" stuff it feels deeply unserious.

If OTE produces great prospects (it looks like they did this draft) then they will damn sure get harder looks in the years going forward.

Your talent ID is horrendous dude you’re the last person who should be talking about that.

I am also done arguing about Bilal. Never seen a mid player getting glazed so hard by fans of a team he didn’t get drafted to. I am good not talking about him anymore. He will be a bust and we can bump this thread in the future.

Whether he busts or fails, I will remember these stupid arguments and have a laugh. This French League stuff is almost as funny as making up fake box scores lol.
