DALLAS -- TCU has accepted a bid to the Big East Conference, which will take effect July 1, 2012, according to sources familiar with the deal. The school has set a news conference for 1 p.m. on campus to make "a major announcement involving the TCU athletics program."

A source confirmed the move to ESPN.com's Joe Schad Monday as well.

Big East commissioner John Marinatto and associate commissioner in charge of communications John Paquette flew to Dallas on Sunday in advance of the announcement, according to a New York Daily News story earlier Monday.

The conference change allows TCU to play in an automatic BCS-qualifying league beginning in the 2012-13 school year. TCU currently plays in the Mountain West Conference, which does not have an automatic bid to the BCS and is going through some changes of its own. BYU and Utah are leaving the conference just as Boise State enters.

TCU would become the Big East's ninth football team. The conference has extended an invitation to Villanova to become its 10th football member.

TCU is 12-0 and ranked No. 3 in the BCS. The Frogs are at the very least headed to the Rose Bowl. But if Auburn or Oregon slip up this weekend, TCU is poised to play for a national title.

The conference change is for all sports, meaning TCU enters a strong basketball league and should get exposure in more eastern sports markets. The league as a whole will now have 17 teams.

This was the inevitable move suggested after the MWC invited Hawaii football a few weeks ago. Boise's best hope now is that the mtn. channel implodes because ESPN was a big part of making them who they are. Going to the Mountain West sans Utah, TCU, BYU and being on the Mtn. network leaves you with nothing.

Not if WVU has any say.

Not until they get a good coach. Same with Pitt. Coaching wise, Patterson will look like genius in Big East.

btw how close is TCU to teams like San Diego St., UNLV, Utah, etc... This team is used to travelling a ways for road games.

It's not much of a difference in aeronautical miles from Fort Worth to the Big East schools and Fort Worth to The Moutain West schools. Obviously they would probably rather be in the Big 12 or SEC, but Texas' central location is probably a pretty big advantage when considering conferences. Teams like BYU and Utah are pretty much only viable to the Pac 10 or Big 12 if they want them.

Great move for them. Think Boise is looking at getting out of its deal with the MWC?

To go where? Nobody wants them in a BCS conference and the Wac is worse now than when they left. They really take a kick in the *** with this move. Boise now plays against tougher teams that they did in the WAC (not much but a little bit tougher) which should limit some of their big scoring wins while also getting less exposure and no chance at an automatic bid anymore. They are going to lose recruits because they are no longer on ESPN, and they are going to take a step back because they will be hard pressed to continue to get respect when nobody can watch them.

Boise screwed up big time accepting that invitation. They had no way of knowing the end consequences but if they had stayed in the WAC it may be the MWC falling apart right now instead of the WAC. Then they would have a better TV deal while also having slightly better competition when some of the MWC leftover's started looking for somewhere to go.

I love it how TCU is going to the Big East and everyone would be traveling across the country yet we can't have a tournament because the poor student athlete would miss too much school.

And we know that the NCAA is mainly concerned with the student athlete. That's why TCU will never g2 the Big East nor will Texas ever consider moving to the Pac-10............

Personally, I compare Utah and TCU as pawns.

They're the BCS busters. To silence them, the powers that be have now invited them to BCS conferences. Now they'll shut up and drop their BCS cases. Notice how Orrin Hatch hasn't made a peep now that Utah has joined. All of a sudden the BCS is completely fair!

I wouldn't be surprised to see Boise invited before BYU, Houston, Nevada, or any of the other mid-major schools. They've broken the BCS before and easily could have done it again this year. All someone needs to do is shut up Boise St. and basically all threats to this corrupt system will be eliminated.

Thanks Utah and TCU, for being willing prostitutes. You both had the opportunity to give big business the finger. You could have worked to take down the evil empire. Instead, you joined the dark side. All of a sudden the BCS is amazing!

Hope Craig James, Mark May, and the rest of those BCS blowhards tip ya well!

You need to stop crying. Utah did what is in its best interest as well as TCU. It is neither school's fault that nobody but the WAC and MWC want BYU.

This certainly kills Boise even more. I predicted TCU would be invited to a conference with an AQ. I didn't think it would be the Big East, but it ultimately is much better than being in the MWC with Hawaii(lol) and Boise State(this news hurts them even more).
