Punch Bowl Re-Filler
Heard on the radio this a.m. that the LA Clippers have just announced a special LGBT night. Ironically, they'll be playing the Chicago Bulls. They're calling it "Equality Night."
It will only be the 4th time in NBA history, I believe, that a team has reached out to this group via a specific promotion. I'm just wondering why teams are allowed to promote special nights for groups based on gender (or gender identity), religion, race, etc? Isn't that discriminatory? And in this case, doesn't it send just the opposite message to the LGBT community - you're "different" from the rest and must be recognized as a separate group?
What about a special, "Jeff Van Gundy night" to honor all short, white, middle-aged, balding guys. Gotta be a ton of those.
No jokes, since I don't want a warning. But it really does seem queer that one specific group is receiving special attention. And I just wonder how the Clipper ticket staff will determine whether someone is LGBT in order to receive a ticket discount. I mean, when I attend a bball game with other guys, that doesn't say anything about my gender identity. Similarly, when 2-3 women in a group decide they must go off to the "powder room" in a pack, it doesn't automatically raise suspicions.
So as a genetic male with all male body parts intact and a male gender identity, can I just "fake it" for a night to get the discount? And would the Clippers be able to sue me if I then hooked up with a woman after the game?
