I dont really think it's an outrageous claim, that hes lost a step -- thats what my eye test told me while keeping a close watch over precisely that, because it kinda stuck out to me... I dont think the decision makers in the FO overlooked that, the idea is that he's in the savvy vet stage of his career, i presume..


He's 32 years old and has played 28,000 career minutes. It's fair to assume there's some tread worn off those tires.. the 82 game schedule is grueling... Also 'todays elite athlete' is always being redefined, if not by small increments each year.. It is what it is..


Not to be that guy, but there has been many occasions where I've taken the stance counter to the general consensus around here and been proven right over time.. The George Hill trade being wastefulland the entire Gordon Hayward saga immediately come to mind, and the Boris Diaw/Joe Johnson "win now" moves too. I dont do it to play the devils advocate, im just sharing my opinions. we'll see.

It was obvious to you last year that Mike Conley lost a step?? You mean last year when he posted the best stats of his career?
Ok, not sure how to give you props for basing an opinion that stats, numbers and math prove you very wrong at.
Forget the math factor, did you watch the Grizzlies grit and grime days for the last 7 years?

My friend, if your brain was a tire, the tread would be worn down to racing slicks and need chains to keep you on path.

The George Hill trade, kept us relevant in the playoffs. Gordon Hayward did suck (see my avatar). Boris Diaw and Joe Jonson were never brought on for "Win Now" moves. In my experience you don't bring on a fat bastard like Boris Diaw if you want to "win now". And you sure as hell don't reach out to his Uncle in Joe Johnson. But if you did, Joe still carried us past the LA Clippers. And the "We'll see" comment is stupid. No we won't, because your opinions about the past players already happened. We already saw. For being the Devils advocate, Satin should fire you and hire someone that is capable of thinking thoughts that aren't stupid. Your not qualified to be the Devils receptionist,, let alone his Advocate.
 
One thing I don't think the Jazz weighed enough is how Marc Gasol helped Conley by being able to operate from anywhere on the floor and still be a threat. Gobert is only a threat to score when rolling, that's a big difference. Not only is the lob super predictable, but it obviously clogs up the lane as well. Let's look at Conley's inside scoring last year compared to this year:

2018:
% of FG attempts inside 3 feet: 19%
FG% inside 3 feet: 55.4%

2019:
% of FG attempts inside 3 feet: 5.3%
FG% inside 3 feet: 50%

As we see, Conley's inside scoring is non existent this year. Conley's lack of height and strength compounds the problem. He is a crafty point guard, but needs more space than a prototypical 6'3" or 6'4" point guard.
I think the Jazz need a big, strong PG to play next to Gobert. There is going to be more congestion and are going to be taking a lot of contact whenever trying to score inside. Mudiay isn't a good basketball player, but does fit this criteria and probably why he's looked decent so far. He's scoring inside 3" with a FG% of 78%.
