The Bell Effect

At first I couldn't understand why Hollins didn't shift Allen to Hayward so Gay could have the night off on defense. Then I saw his genius. Allen literally didn't guard Bell. He'd make a token effort to run at Bell and make a loud sound if he was going to shoot, but he mostly played the paint. He even got tagged with a defensive 3 seconds! This had 2 very noticeable effects:

1. On defense, his presence down low was able to deter entry passes. He also stuffed a Harris drive and picked up several rebounds.
2. On offense, he was murder in transition. He abused Bell on the perimeter a few times, but because he was not actually defending Bell, he was able to get out on the break without anybody to slow him down.

Also very interesting: Hollins subbed out Allen in the 1st and 3rd EXACTLY when Ty replaced Bell. In other words, this was all a very designed strategy. And it worked beautifully. When Bell was taken out in the first, we were down 6. In the 3rd, we went down a net of 6. In BOTH cases, after Bell was taken out, we went on runs.

Which would explain Bell's negative +/- for the game when about everyone else was +.
Bell was the only -, and Allen was the only + on their team.

Interesting.

Another example that your perimeter players HAVE to be a threat in some way if you want to run an offense.

And Bell made him pay for it with that wide right all backboard 20 foot jumper in the first that sounded like a load of wet laundry hitting cement.

Bell has become the new Ronnie Brewer, but less athletic. Can't make a shot on a regular basis, and isn't guarded by his man.

Now admittedly, I saw the intangibles that he is bringing to the team, moving the ball, only taking good bricks, but as has been said, if the other team doesn't respect you, than the Jazz are only running on 4 pistons offensively. (and all the defensive effort in the world can't overcome a slow footspeed)

"only taking good bricks"..... lol you slay me! this is some funny stuff right there
repped.

It was honestly comical how little Allen even looked at Bell. 75% of the time, he was hawking the ball. What we saw was a professional basketball player guard another professional basketball player for 19 minutes and he only looked at him for 4 minutes.

pretend you're Raja Bell.... what would you do at this point?

ok, now pretend you're Ty Corbin.... how would you handle this?

That has to be in the running for the most understated statement of the year IMO.

LOL.

I respect players whose attitude is they have to change the locks before they retire. So I've got no real problem with Raja's handling of his own situation (or any delusions he might have about his ability). This is really up to Ty. I just think he doesn't want to do what has to be done. On an emotional level, it's much easier to sit young guys than put an old guy out to pasture.

Tell that to Bruce Bowen. He was nowhere near the fastest guy on the court, but he was a serious lock-down defender.

As long as Raja stays the best defensive wing we have - which he has been so far - he will continue to start against the other teams best 2 guard. It is that simple. I am not a Raja lover. I openly disagreed with bringing him back to Utah when we signed him last year. But he is our best wing defender, he runs the sets on D the way Ty wants them run, and he doesn't make rookie mistakes on defense. He helps set a tone to start the game from a defensive standpoint. Fairly obvious why Ty is using him the way he is.

Bell played with a lot of energy last night. I'm not going to criticize him if he put the effort on the court. Shots don't always fall go ask Gordo Hayward.

as long as raja stays the slowest wing we have - which he has been so far - he will continue to be a nonfactor against other teams best 2 guard. It is that simple. I am not a raja lover. I openly disagreed with bringing him back to utah when we signed him last year. But he is our slowest wing, he runs the sets on d the way ty wants them run, and he makes veteran mistakes on defense. He helps set a tone to start the game, allowing the jazz to start the game slowly. Fairly obvious why ty is using him the way he is.

Josh Howard has been the Jazz's best wing defender. CJ and Hayward are terrible defenders, granted, and Burks has a tough time with screens on occasion, but Raja is almost always a net negative on the court. He's done.

Edit: Opposing 2 guards have a PER of 19.4 when Raja's on the court (with an efg% of .556). Overall, opposing 2 guards have a PER of 12.8 against the Jazz (with an efg% of .465).

No doubt, Raja's the Jazz's best wing defender.
