Trump admin gags social media use
January 20
National Park Service employees receive an email directing all Department of Interior bureaus to "immediately cease use of government Twitter accounts until further notice."
The gag order arrives hours after the official National Park Service Twitter account retweeted photos comparing the Trump inauguration to the 2009 Obama inauguration. The tweet was quickly removed and the Twitter account issued an apology the following day.
Trump speaks at the CIA headquarters and references his distaste for the media several times. His quotes include:
“I always call them the dishonest media, but they treated me nicely.”
“And the reason you’re my first stop is that, as you know, I have a running war with the media. They are among the most dishonest human beings on Earth.”
“And I turn on—and by mistake I get this network, and it showed an empty field. And it said we drew 250,000 people. Now, that’s not bad, but it’s a lie.”
“So we caught them, and we caught them in a beauty. And I think they’re going to pay a big price.”
The Trump Administration issues multiple gag orders to the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service, and Department of Health and Human Services, effectively ceasing the agencies’ communication with the press and the public.
PEN America issues a statement countering the gag orders, calling them “incompatible with American democratic values of government transparency and the public’s right to know.”
President Trump appoints Ajit Pai as the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Pai is noted to be an opponent of the FCC's net neutrality regulations, a set of rules that require internet providers such as Verizon and Comcast to provide the same level of service to all websites and apps. Pai has described the regulations as a "mistake."
Six journalists arrested and charged with felonies

The Guardian reports six journalists covering protests near the Trump inauguration parade have been arrested and charged with felony rioting.
PEN America issues a press statement warning that the arrest of journalists covering protests in Washington, D.C., “is an alarming encroachment on the right of the press to document public demonstrations.”
Trump Administration halts nuclear whistleblower protection
January 24
The Department of Energy temporarily halts an Obama Administration regulation that had prohibited federal nuclear contractors from retaliating against whistleblowers. The Department states that the change is in response to President Trump's "plan for managing the Federal regulatory process at the outset of the new Administration."
Following public backlash over news of the gag order, BuzzFeed reports that they have obtained an email sent to the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service which states that the gag order on the department "is hereby rescinded" and should not have been issued.
Reuters reports that employees of the Environmental Protection Agency were ordered by the Trump Administration to remove a page detailing climate change and scientific global warming research from its website. The order is later suspended following backlash from the public.
