The Case for Letting Exum Walk

Dante is going to demand some coin. If you look at the numbers Ty Wallace put up for the Clips last year they are comparable. This is the same Ty that was Jazz property and stunk so bad in summer league that the Jazz let him go. Use the $$$ that would go to X for Favors or another free agent.

Do it. Not a good idea for Utah. There's some interesting potential landing spots out there for him though... There's a western conference bottom-feeder that he'd be a perfect match for IMO.

The Jazz are likely going to be able to keep him on a relatively cheap contract. I don't think anyone will give him more than 8 million per year. Money is tight this summer. There aren't very many teams who have cap space. There is no reason for the Jazz to let Exum walk if it only costs 6-8 mill a year to keep him. He's still only 22 and still has significant potential.

My point is there is an entire other league in this country that has players that would put up Ty Wallace/Dante numbers for less $$$.

He is not worth it. Let's be honest, he has a quick first step and is a defender and is an occasional spot up shooter. But there is nothing else there. He has had 4 years, I don't care if he has been injured - 4 years is an eternity in the NBA and he hasn't changed much since his first year and he won't be much different his next 4 years. He is fine to be signed for depth and a backup role, but he is not a starter.

Yeah, let him walk......He is a ball fumbler and injury prone. An awful lot of hype for essentially nothing in return. True, he had a few nice moments but being injury prone is a major liability.

Dante ain’t gonna be spendy and he had some nice moments... unique player that if he unlocks a couple things becomes pretty useful... why give up now... if he got something crazy then sure let him go... I don’t see him getting anything I wouldn’t match.

I just want to see him play a full season with us. Curiosity more than anything. Plus we did spend a extremely valuable high pick on him.
We owe it to ourselves to see what he's got. Obviously the front office is still interested in him.

If he makes a leap this year we could be deadly. A long guard, who can blow by people, and defend. Now adding Allen, who is ready to contribute, to the mix. We could really be tough for teams to deal with. Thabo in there as well. We have a lot of weapons to throw at people.

I just picture Quin as a war general throwing a big map on the table, clapping his long hands together wildly, and saying what shall Daddy do to you today....

There's always some crazy GMs out there throwing ridiculous amount all the time. Then a year or couple years later, their a** are trying to trade that said player which happens all the time! I'm afraid the same thing will happen to Exum. He'll be give a stupid amount and the Jazz would have no choice but pass. It's pretty much the same with Favors too. Can't stand those stupid GMs, which is why a lot get their a** canned.

Dante will not get more than the $8.6 MLE.

These are the only teams with any cap space this summer (unless DeAndre Jordan and Enes Kanter opt out of their $24 million and $18 million deals which is highly, highly, unlikely):

Lakers - $60 million but that doesn't include Randle. If they want LeBron at max ($36), they could add him. If they wanted LeBron ($36) and PG ($30), they would still have to shed Ingram ($6) or Deng ($18).

Sixers - $28 but they are probably going to pick up TJ McConnell ($2). So they have about $26 million to spend.

Mavs - $31 but they will pick up Dirk's $5 million option. So they really have about $25 million to spend.

Hawks - $26 because Dedmon already picked up his $6 million option. Mike Muscala probably picks up his too ($5). So they really have about $20 million to spend.

UTAH JAZZ - $19 million because we will definitely pick up O'Neale's $1.5. We still have to decide on Exum and Favors.

Kings
- $19 million because Temple has said he will pick up his $8 million option.

Suns - $18 million because they will renounce Len, Payton and everybody else.

Pacers - $52 but Thad Young ($14), Bogdanovic ($11), Collison ($10) and Stephenson ($4) are all probably kept. So they really have about $12 million to spend.

Bulls - $37 but Zach LeVine and Noah Vonleh are probably kept. Let's safely say they take $30 combined, Chicago has around $10 million to spend.

None of these teams are going to give more than the $8.6 full MidLevel Exception for Dante Exum. Just take a look at these free agents this year: https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/...ul-george-chris-paul-lead-top-50-free-agents/

Guys who are probably going to get more than MLE who are better prospects than Dante:

Julius Randle
Marcus Smart
JJ Reddick
Jabari Parker
Derrick Favors?
Trevor Ariza?
Tyreke Evans?
Will Barton
Fred VanVleet
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope
Avery Bradley
Rodney Hood?
Joe Harris?
And this list doesn't even count the PG, LBJ, Chris Paul players who could actually take some of that space above.

I don’t want him to walk because I think there’s something there. That being said, I’m really torn on offering him a QO. I think he’ll get paid less than that per year on a long-term deal
