The Climate Change Thread

This is revealing, but won’t come as a surprise:

The Army Corps of Engineers knew that Trump’s order to release water in California wildfires was actually the very height of stupidity.

The Army Corps of Engineers colonel responsible for releasing water from two California reservoirs at President Donald Trump’s direction in January knew that it was unlikely to reach the southern part of the state as Trump had promised, according to a memo obtained by The Washington Post.

The agency carried out Trump’s directive, which came in the wake of catastrophic wildfires in Los Angeles County, on short notice on Jan. 30, though it would normally require days to coordinate. A memo written four days after the release, obtained by The Post through a public records request, shows how federal officials rushed ahead with the plan to release irrigation water despite objections from the state’s elected officials and some local farmers.

Col. Chad W. Caldwell, commander of the Army Corps’ Sacramento district, wrote that the water that poured out of Lake Kaweah and Success Lake “could not be delivered to Southern California directly.” To do so would have required several steps of coordination with state and federal agencies to transport the water to a rarely used connection point, and it quickly became clear that was impossible in such little time, according to the memo.

The first that Department of Water Resources Director Karla Nemeth heard about the planned release came in a phone call from an Army Corps colonel around noon that day, according to a state water official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private communications.

Other water entities, such as local irrigation districts and the State Water Resources Control Board, also received notice from the Army Corps on the same day as the water release began.

Many were alarmed when they found out.

For the farmers in the Central Valley, it was not irrigation season, and this was their precious summer supply. It had been an abnormally dry January, snowpack was low, and an atmospheric river headed toward California was not forecast to significantly affect the two reservoirs in the foothills of the southern Sierra Nevada.

And, of course, Trump was proud to broadcast his innate stupidity to the world:

Well ya it was obvious to me that trumps plan all along was to sabotage the state of California for the coming year of crops which also hurts the United States as a whole which would make Putin happy.
So for trump, wasting that water was a tremendous success.

Yes, Trump’s task is to weaken the United States from within, while joining a new Axis of Evil on the international stage.

Stupid, but fully expected.

Before a packed crowd of oil and gas executives on Monday, Chris Wright, the new U.S. energy secretary, delivered a scathing critique of the Biden administration’s energy policies and efforts to fight climate change and promised a “180 degree pivot.”

Mr. Wright, a former fracking executive, has emerged as the most forceful promoter of President Trump’s plans to expand American oil and gas production and dismantle virtually every federal policyaimed at curbing global warming.

“I wanted to play a role in reversing what I believe has been a very poor direction in energy policy,” Mr. Wright said as he kicked off the CERAWeek by S&P Global conference in Houston, the nation’s biggest annual gathering of the energy industry. “The previous administration’s policy was focused myopically on climate change, with people as simply collateral damage.”

Mr. Wright’s speech was greeted with enthusiastic applause.

"Trump fumed on Truth Social: “Why would our Country allow another Country to supply us with electricity, even for a small area?”“Who made these decisions, and why?”The decision to maintain the free flow of energy across the borders was part of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement it was negotiated by Trump in November 2018 during his first term. It was signed into law in January 2020.Trump is too geriatric to remember his own decisions, much less lead the free world.Forcing Trump to hold office is elder abuse."

Trump says climate change is a hoax. So, naturally, let’s criminalize climate science….Criminalizing Habitat for Humanity, folks! At Least he waited until Jimmy Carter was in his grave, although Trump would not only have done it while Carter still lived and breathed, but he would have gleefully trolled Carter about it, and painted Carter as evil….

The FBI is moving to criminalize groups like Habitat for Humanity for receiving grants from the Environmental Protection Agency under the Biden administration.

Citibank revealed in a court filing Wednesday that it was told to freeze the groups’ bank accounts at the FBI’s request. The reason? The FBI alleges that the groups are involved in “possible criminal violations,” including “conspiracy to defraud the United States.”

“The FBI has told Citibank that recipients of EPA climate grants are being considered as potentially liable for fraud. That is, the Trump administration wants to criminalize work on climate science and impacts,” the @capitolhunters account wrote Wednesday on X. “An incoming administration not only cancels federal grants but declares recipients as criminals. All these grantees applied under government calls FOR ENVIRONMENTAL WORK, were reviewed and accepted. Trump wants to jail them.“

The Appalachian Community Capital Corporation, the Coalition for Green Capital, and the DC Green Bank are just some of the nonprofits being targeted.

“This is not fraud. This is targeted harassment,” @capitolhunters continued. “The idea of criminalizing community climate work wouldn’t have originated at the FBI—it likely comes from EPA director Lee Zeldin, who today cut all EPA’s environmental justice offices, which try to reduce pollution in poor and minority communities.”

So wrong on so many levels.
If anyone tries to improve air quality, water quality, soil quality, prevent fires, prevent floods etc then we should just put them in jail.

Yeah, assuming Trump is there in the background, his extreme spiteful nature produces so many insanely over the top reactions. He must want to punish climate scientists, put an end to any climate studies or monitoring of climate change, if he can. It’s nuts, and a sad example of how he believes his beliefs and wishes exceed all, and are not up for debate.

At least I'll give you credit for admitting fraudsters and climate scientists are synonymous terms.

The audit is finding evidence of parties who have criminally defrauded the US government, not people who study the changes to Earth's climate. That so many climate activist groups are being swept up only proves how sketchy the entire enterprise was. If any of these NGOs were legitimate, they should be endeavoring to distance themselves from the criminals. Instead they are embracing the criminal element to present a united front.

Last year was the hottest year on record, the top 10 hottest years were all in the past decade and planet-heating carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are at an 800,000-year high, a report Wednesday said.

In its annual State of the Climate report, the World Meteorological Organization laid bare all the markings of an increasingly warming world with oceans at record high temperatures, sea levels rising and glaciers retreating at record speed.

“Our planet is issuing more distress signals,” said António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General. He noted that the report says the international goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.8 Fahrenheit) since pre-industrial times is still possible. “Leaders must step up to make it happen — seizing the benefits of cheap, clean renewables for their people and economies,” he said.
