This talk of elite offense and defense made me realize something.
I'm admittedly pretty ignorant about defense in bbal. In my playing days too. I was a great shooter from anywhere, about as good of a ball handler as there was, pretty good passer, could finish will with either hand, could score with my off hand pretty well from anywhere inside about 10 feet, great in transition, off balance, half court, etc etc. Not many weaknesses on the offensive end. (Maybe liked to have the ball a bit too much but I was willing and good at getting it to my scorers in position to score.)
Defensively I was horrible at guarding the perimeter. So bad that I feared it. I was ok down low but not good. Too skinny to bang with the bigs defensively and too slow laterally to guard the perimeter. And hell, if I'm honest, I just didn't want to play defense.
When I watch games it's somewhat similar. I don't notice great defense very often. There are exceptions. Guys like Gobert, draymond, Ben wallace, Gary payton, Michael cooper..... I couldn't/cant not notice their defense.
A guy like hayward or ingles I only see the great defense if I really try to watch them and make it a point to see it. I know they are good defenders cause everyone says they are and there are advanced stats to show it. Each game I would see things from them here and there that made me notice but overall they never really stand out enough to make my ignorant eyes see it.
The reason I bring this up is Dante Exum.
Since we drafted him I have talked about as much **** about him as anyone here (I love offense as I said, so it makes sense cause he kinda sucks offensively).
But, he is one of those players who makes it so I can't not see his defensive presence. That gives me lots of hope for him. I think he is an elite defender to the point that if his offense sucks I still want him on the court. (I think his speed will get him easy offense often enough that he will at least be passable on offense)
So many times I have seen guys try to drive on him and he shuts them down with his position defense (refs stupidly call fouls on him too much for his great defense though. I think he has been officiated worse defensively than any jazz player I have ever seen) and often should be getting the charge call called on the offensive player.
I have seen him block a large number of shots from the perimeter too. This seems extremely special rare.
Basically, I believe in X, if only for his defense. Any offensive improvement is a bonus.
