The Donovan Mitchell Hype Thread! (repository of highlights and effusive praise)

I've been thinking about this, and I'd actually take that bet. Dante will become a respectable 3 point threat within the next 2-3 years.

250+ 3s in a season. 35%+. He has 3 years to do it. 3 months signature or avatar bet. Deal?

three 3 point shots a game? that's doable especially if he's league average or above and he's getting mins.

3 a game for 82 games would be 246. I just don't see him taking 3 a game and playing all 82 games is always rare.

Yeah. I thought about what would be good enough sample. I was specifically talking about him becoming a legit floor-spacer. I think as a wing/PG he needs to shoot at least 3 a game and hit them at average rate to be a good floor spacer. He also shot over 250 as a rookie which is over 3 a game... I don't know. I think it's reasonable condition on the bet.

Looking at Tony Parker's 3-pt shooting stats, he's been an erratic 3-pt shooter his entire career. That just wasn't his game. I keep expecting Exum to play like a bigger Tony Parker.

If Exum can blow by his defender or the entire pick-and-roll coverage and get into the lane, that's better than asking him to pull from 3 in most cases. He can create high-percentage looks for other players, including better 3-pt shooters. It's more critical for him to be able to finish at the rim or pull up from 15 - 18 feet off the bounce.

David Locke was a guest on Real GM Radio podcast with Danny Leroux this week where they did a preview of the Northwest Division. I thought it was interesting Locke said he thinks Mitchell will average 15 points a game this season. Anyway the other guy on the show, can't remember his name said he wasn't very high on Mitchell, or at least as high as most other people. Locke countered and said, "Hey man, last guy I saw tear up summer league like that was Dame and he turned out pretty well." (I'm paraphrasing and probably doing a poor job of it.)

This comment by Locke comparing Mitchell to Dame... I think it's interesting though he's certainly not the first to do it. I started watching summer league highlights for Dame one thing that stands out to me is how much more smooth Dame looks on offense and some of the passes he makes. I don't think Mitchell will be better than Dame at anything offensively accept maybe drawing fouls and moving without the ball. That said I think it's apparent DM is already a better defender by a lot. Mitchell definitely has more the skill set of a wing. The more I think about it, the more I wish DM was 2-3 inches taller!

I'm not sure his handle is currently good enough to be a star tbh. It's certainly adequate to get the job done but not yet where it needs to be if he is going to one day be an allstar. I think his handle will show some blemishes when the regular season starts and he's facing scouting reports, better defensive schemes (defensive schemes period actually), and better defensive players i.e. real NBA players who are longer, more experienced and at times just as athletic if not more athletic.

Does anyone think Mitchell could get to Dame's level offensively?

If DM were 2-3 inches taller, he wouldn't have been available for the Jazz to pick, so there's that.

COULD he get to Dame's level offensively? Sure. Will he? Probably not. But with his probable defensive he can still be darn good without being quite at that level offensively.

I want him to be the Wing-Gobert. Near-Bogert level defense but on the wing, with not bad offense. If he becomes a top 10 wing defender (top 5 on the high end) and a top 20 offensive player (or even top 30) that is something special. Pair that with Rudy, a bunch of shooters and solid position defense guys and a respectable bench and we will really compete.

Night after Night having DM guard players 3 to 5 inches taller than him .This isn't a 19 yr old Tatum like SL he's going to try and intimidate and get away with it. I think Exum ,even though he wants to play PG and Hood will guard these guys.It won't be Mitchell.

I'm guessing you're the type of jazz fan who has never heard of Wes Matthews. Am I right?

Also, how many ways is the top of your head utilized in defensive schemes?

You do know that the 6'4" Tony Allen and the 6'2" Avery Bradley are considered 2 of the best wing defenders in the league and play the 2 right? Mitchell might not have the height but he has the length and strength to be able to guard all those guys you listed effectively

How many of those dudes really have post games though? There is an advantage of having a smaller center of gravity to get into people's personal space while they are dribbling or going up for their shot. That can be negated by a good post-up game ala Kobe, but not a ton of players have that and DM has enough strength to make that tough for people who aren't advanced in the post.
