The Great Rap Debate

"rapping about negative, self-indulgent, nonsense" Jazzman12

You nailed it right here, Jazzman. I love the music but the lyrics are damaging a generation of black youth.
Truth. They rap (tell stories) about what they see. Many rappers come from unpleasant places/situations and their lyrics reflect that.

I think that the lyrics are less damaging than the living situations they are subjected to though.

My favorite rapper is tupac. I listened to rap before tupac but his second album blew me away and thats when i really started to like rap music. On that album he sings a song call keep ya head up.
Im going off the top of my head here so i might get some lyrics wrong and im only gonna do one verse (not sure which verse it is tbh).
To all the ladies havin babies on ya own
i know its kinda rough and you feelin all alone
daddys long gone and he left ya by ya lonesome
Thank the lord for the kids even if nobody else want em
cause i think we can make it in fact im sure
and if you fall, stand tall and come back for more
cause aint nothin worse than when your son wants to know why his daddy dont love him no mo
you cant complain you was dealt this
helluva hand without a man feeling helpless
cause theres too many things for you to deal with
dyin inside but outside you lookin fearless
while tears is rollin down your cheeks
ya steady hopin things dont fall down this week
cause if it did ya couldn't take it
and dont blame me, i was given this world i didn't make it
(next part is my favorite)
now my sons gettin older and older
and cold, from havin the world on his shoulders
while the rich kids is drivin Benz
im still tryin to hold on to my survivin friends
and its crazy and seems it'll never let up
but, please, ya got to keep ya head up.

That's pretty touching Fish. Just out of curiosity, did he write that song before or after this one:

[little kid] Tell me about these fake *** bitches

[2Pac]
Look here little *****
Most of these niggaz be bitches too
but you'll never hear that side of the story
So uhh, we finna do this **** like this

It's like I tell my niggaz, keep your eyes on these bitches
They love to G a ***** young dumb and gettin riches

[Chorus: 2Pac]

And there's plenty of em
You probably got one sittin next to you right now
Bobbin his fake *** head to this, dope *** **** that he listenin to
Fake *** mother****in bitch, die in ninety-four

You seem to make an awful lot of assumptions in your posts. I pointed out the fact more than once in my original post that there is always exceptions to the rule. OutKast seems to be one of those exceptions. I will however, disagree with you that the likes of: "I'm sorry Miss Jackson, I AM FOR REAL" is better work than what John Lennon gave the world. As far as the 99.9999% of the sewage I'm accused to listening to, I'm quite happy to keep listening to it, as I'm sure you're quite happy listening to the rap music. Have a great day.

What a dumb response. I could respond with picking any *NUMBER* Of Beatles songs with lame, ****ty lyrics.

We can even stick to the same album if you want--

Have you heard the news today
They say a little 14 year old little girl had a baby on the way//

Too much for her little mind to bare
And that type of news to her mama she cannot spare//

Toilet Tisha, damn we miss ya
Toilet Tisha is the issue
Damn we miss ya, Toilet Tisha
Damn we miss ya

You clearly don't know what you're talking about. Kindly stay in your own mother****ing lane.

Fish,

I don't think I took up the mantle of saying that every rock lyric is pure gold. There are simplistic lyrics everywhere in all genres of music. You used some of Queen's music as an example. First of all, I don't think it's an apples-to-apples argument, but I'll bite anyway. You may not like the lyrics or how they are sang in Bohemian Rhapsody. Fair enough, but I'll throw my respect behind the band that was able to create the riffs, music, and arrangement for Bohemian Rhapsody over Nicki Minaj "singing" about some guy eating out her *** any day of the week.
You are comparing Queen to an artist that had an image entirely fabricated to succeed in a purely commercial sense w/o much artistic merit.

That's like me taking Outkast and comparing them to Nickleback to make the point rock sucks.

You talking about southernplayalisticcaddilacmusic?
That's my favorite outcast album.

Nah that was their debut, and while that album truly was dope, they really took off with the accolades and the sales in their subsequent works. Their 2nd and 3rd albums are (IMO) the best, their 4th has a 95 on Metacritic, and their 5th is basically the best-selling rap record of all-time (and the one that swept the Grammys).

Good point.
There is definitely a lot of variety to his lyrics. Some negative, some positive. All raw as ****. That's part of what's so great about it. He wasn't writing music to try to get anyone to approve or to try to please anyone. Just writing what he felt at that time and what he was seeing in his many varying experiences he had been through.

I'm sorry I talked badly about your Hip and/or Hop music.

"OutKast is an exception!!11211!!" even though they were inspired by like 5-10 similar musical groups, from DasEFX to Hiero/Souls of Mischief and ACTQ and De La.

This conversation reeks of the stench that Americans have made in bigotry past, with regards to funk music, disco music, blues music, basically every black art or musical form. This is just the new rendition of it.

Yup, and no one gets at the Stones for their misogyny

It's down to me, oh yeah
The way she talks when she's spoken to
Down to me, the change has come,
She's under my thumb
Yeah, it feels alright

Under my thumb
Her eyes are just kept to herself
Under my thumb, well I
I can still look at someone else

These conversations are never had in legitimate ways, either through ignorance or racism.

Btw jazzman, i appreciate the thread and I hope you noticed my lack of insults or name calling towards you.

We can agree to disagree and I don't have a problem with your hatred of rap music. Doesn't hurt my feelings or make me think less of you or anything.

What is Bohemian Rhapsody about it anyway? Great song, but nonsensical lyrics.

I think the lyrics are pretty overt, especially the beginning of the first stanza which explains what the song is about.

So what is it about? And will the scaramooch do the fandango?

Mama Mia mama mia mama Mia Figgeroh vih herr the Douche has a devil for the sight on meeeee on meeeee on meeeee. (Then they thrash on the guitar while Wayne and garth shake their hair and hold up the devil horn sign)

Lol I obviously have no idea what the lyrics are.

I'm also a person who loves to read books, and watch movies. A lot of my favorite rap tells an interesting and educational story in the lyrics.

Often about ho's and getting various forms of currency. And social interactions with law enforcement.

And I really hate the "but rock music takes more talent and musicianship". It has some merit, but more than taking more skill it just takes more money, space, and people.

Eddie Van Halen, Slash, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, among others, may disagree somewhat. They all started small with no money but absolute ****-loads of talent.

Uhh, you read a lot into that. I never said everyone who has every picked up a guitar had to be rich to learn it.

*And I absolutely deplore all 3 of those guitarist, but that is here nor there. Technically amazing musicians but not a fan. I'd compare them to Eminem. I hate Eminem, but technically no one can touch him. I personally dont equate technical ability to talent in a 1 to 1 ratio (but that is obviously personal taste).*

Did they have guitars, drums, amps, etc? That stuff costs.
