Teh holy maternal energy which is in all of us doth provideth! Capitalize! Take advantage! All Birth comes through her. The seed of creation lay within her. The very soil, rock, and mineral from which you've constructed your roofs comes only from her! And thus... you are surrounded by her! Therefore, in the very place that you now stand, you yourself have become a seed again! You will emerge from this moment a changed person! You will go out and take from her like never before. Born again, you will find new fruits... and you will quench the thirst of your labors with them! She will soothe you! You will take extra if it is available, store the surplus, and then use it to extract more value from her elsewhere and at another time! She is a good god.

Can you believe people who talk like this? What kind of child do they think I am that I need to be taught something about the existence of a Mother Earth? Can you believe that they expect me to engage with the idea that she is infinitely productive? and that she will be pure good and give of herself always? Why don't they expect that I know more about the world than fits into this Family Story?

Is this supposed to be your paean to mothers?

if so, it's a big fail.

but amusing.

happy mother's day to all mothers everywhere!

I'd agree that the family metaphor is usually an over-simplified and problematic way of explaining creation, but I also think that if you aren't careful, then you can be un-generous to the concept of family. Maybe the best way out of these criticisms you like to instigate is to explode the concept of family from the other side - that is, reinvent what a family is so that it fits your understanding of creation. A family can be anything; it's just a set of relationships, and everything is related to everything else.

And besides, you'll never be able to know if the people you engage on this topic ACTUALLY HAVE a radical reading of family! So you could be missing out on some wisdom they have which could help you build your new understanding.

would "stfu" be an appropriate response?

Damn, girl. Moey getting all 'bout it, 'bout it.

Dude, I respect this insight a lot. It has made me think. But, respectfully, I have to disagree with you here. Some of the brightest minds I've ever come across agree that the concept of family is, more often than not, an instrument used to constrain our freer movements. Just look at the way Freud takes the bourgeois family of his time, which was coded by generations of capitalism, and makes it a universal model for all mankind. There were ****ing anthropologists over in New Guinea talking about the variations on the Oedipus complex. People dedicated their lives to excavating New Guinean culture and consciousness using these terms, and there was no shortage of medicalizing and stigmatizing effects.

It's not just the Europeans who have used Family so awfully. Take a sniff around any monotheism, in particular. How are their patriarchs controlling the flow of their women?

In short, sometimes you just have to **** concepts. You're asking me to handle this one gingerly, when the weight of its history makes this difficult.

This is an interesting statement. In respect to religious groups, how can one ever be part of any institution that shuns 50% of it's membership from power roles?

huh?

flow?

Interesting word choice. Then again, perhaps I'm reading too much into it.

There is no more powerful role than baring, raising, and teaching children.

No clergy role can touch the power a mother has.

Liberal women are clueless in rejecting/dismissing the more powerful private voice while seeking a less powerful public voice.

Seems to like you've rationalized your position as not all women are mothers or want to be mothers.

Everyone has a mother (good or bad), and she has more influence on the males of society than the clergy could ever hope to have.

Motherhood is the ultimate power role.
