The horror of drafting in the 6-10 range

I remember this. The crazy thing was, I wrote on this site over and over again, how someone with Oden's size, really wasn't that special. He was very big for college and HS. But, in the NBA, he was average in size. He was over-hyped for some reason.

Congrats on knowing Oden would suffer the worst run of injuries in NBA history?

Would have been very good without all the injuries.

The only "lack of work ethic" type thing Oden had was being depressed as **** that he went from someone who was hyped as a future Hall of Famer to someone that was nothing more than a punch line, all because his body was failing him which was something he couldn't control.

I just feel that if you are gonna suck anyways then you might as well suck enough to get the best chance at the best player possible

This. You have to put your franchise in a position to draft o acquire to best player available. There is no guaranteed that you will get a franchise player, you need (as cowhide said) smart management and luck. And even if you get those, no one knows how a player will pan out after a few years.

This seems to be a deep draft and that a few stars will come out of it. Hence, draft as high as possible to give you a better chance at getting one. Even for trade purposes, drafting 4th is much more valuable than 7th.

Yeah, I remember NOT drafting Oden was a huge risk that few GMs were willing to take. Most GMs would have taken Oden over Durant in a heart beat. He was a big man with huge upside who could protect the rim. The thinking at the time was that you don't pass on a big man like that. A remember few sport writers who were against Oden as a number 1 pick, Bill Simmons being one of them.

Also, if i recall correctly, Oden played with a broken wrist (shooting hand) during college so he learnt how to use both hands. And he did great. GMs and scouts were impressed at the time.

The worst thing Utah can do is get stuck in mediocrity limbo - especially in a Western Conference where it could damn them to missing the playoffs even with a respectable record. This team needs a jolt and if it means risking losing a ****-ton of games, so be it. We're not going anywhere anyway.

Teams don't tank to get the 4th or 7th pick. They tank for the opportunity to struck gold and get a top 3 pick, where, according to your own numbers, there is the highest probability of finding a star. We are not finishing in the bottom 3 in the standings so more ping pong balls wouldn't hurt. BTW, we are not tanking as the 76ers are. We are just bad, don't play hard and have a coach named Corbin.

If you think the Jazz are as bad as the 6ers you are out of your ****ing mind.

I get it, I want the Jazz to tank too, but the reality is they just aren't as bad as a few teams out there. Just like everyone can't be the best, everyone can't be the worst either.

going golden state style and sitting favors, trey, and gordon for gobert, lucas, and rush alot more often sure would help though.

What??? Did I say that? Perhaps it's my broken english or just you. There is no way we are as bad as the 76ers. They are atrocious, unwatchable. I was pointing out that we are not tanking as hard as we could. Quite the opposite from the 76ers, who has done everything possible to be horrible. We have talent but are a weak team overall and are coached by corbin. We should aim at finishing with the 4th or 5th worst record to give us the best chance in the lottery.

This.
Forget philly and millwaukee.

our competition is lakers, boston, kings, detroit, new orleans, and to a lesser extent orlando. (Maybe we can catch the magic if we tank hard enough)

I would love to see more of rush, lucas, biedrins, gobert, clarke, etc.
Maybe corbin is fighting for his job so he wont do it. If thats the case then maybe fire corbin and hire someone who will tank.
If thats not possible then have the medical staff tell corbin that a couple of our main players cant play due to injuries/sickness each game.

I think the jazz have held favors and hayward out of games this season that they could have played in..... now i want to see them do it more often/consistently.

I watched the SA - Magic game and was surprised by Orl. The lakers ' schedule is a nightmare. Outanking boston and sacramento is realistic. Time to play biendrins and clark

I can see this playing out a lot like the 2005 draft, in which there were four star players (Andrew Bogut, Marvin Williams - HA!, Deron Williams, Chris Paul) and we ended up with the 5th pick before targeting Williams and moving up for him.

Realistically, we will likely end up in the 6-8 range barring a miracle on lottery night. But the beauty of our current situation is that we have the same luxury we had then, which is (hopefully) the ability to cherry pick "our guy" and go get him. We have a 2nd 1st round pick, plenty of young talent, and an ungodly amount of cap room. Wiggins or Embiid might be out of reach but I think it's feasible for us to move up from 7-8 to 3-5 if we fall in love with Parker, Exum, Randle, etc.

Wiggins/Parker is best case scenario in my eyes, but I'm liking the idea of Exum more and more.

Or like last year's draft. Sometimes there is a dumb GM willing to trade at the top of the draft. In 2005 it was Portland. They didn't want dwill or cp3 because they drafted telfair the year before. They thought he was the future at pg (lol), along with webster (5th pick), who was their guy at sg/sf. Last year we fleeced Minnesota because they had rubio.

This isn't a diss to Sean, but, seriously, how many times has this post been written over the past 3 years? I'm setting the over/under at 800.5

facts.....

Yup. Since 1990, if you don't have Jordan, Hakeem, Shaq, LeBron, Kobe or Duncan, you aren't winning a title. Crazy. 4 of those 6 were #1 picks. One was a #3, and one was the first HS ever taken (i.e., if that draft was redone today, not knowing their futures, Kobe would go #1, Iverson #2).

That means that 5 of the 6 were #1 picks, and the only other one (Jordan) was taken behind one of those #1 picks.

It is literally impossible to win a title in the NBA. The sad thing is, only SA was smart enough to realize that and do everything they could to get Duncan.

It's why so many teams are tanking this year. There is another one of "those" players in this draft. LA, Boston, Philly all realize that the only way to win a title is to get that guy. The next shot NBA teams will have at adding a player who can win a title after this year is 2017 (excluding whoever gets LeBron).

Sad.

Kobe not first HS ever taken..... Dawkins, Garnett, a few others.

Teams who won titles without the players you listed: Celtics, Pistons. Not to mention the many teams with legit chances to win who made the finals.

"Literally impossible"? really? Don't think that teams have a chance to win with trades or free agent signings of top talent? Only way is the draft?

Methinks you don't have all the facts and you use an awful lot of hyperbole.

I guess i was wrong about oden.

Was marvin a guaranteed certain star? I dont think he even started for his college team iirc
And yet he was picked ahead of and projected ahead of Chris Paul, Deron Williams, and others in a pretty stacked draft. In this draft like others have said there will most likely be a huge bust. And there will be multiple guys going 6+ that end up better than 1-3 of the top 5 picks. This draft is being hyped like crazy and I don't believe it will live up to it. If there is more than 1 franchise player in this draft I'll be surprised.
