I personally think it's 50-50 right now to whether he stays or goes. I tend to think he's going to stay. Regardless, I will stick around to root for our Jazz. If Hayward were to leave with zero compensation (so no sign and trade), I would do the following (and remember this would be after the draft and into July):
- Sign Kelly Olynyk to a long term deal. If Boston gets Hayward, then they probably won't match on a long term deal for Olynyk. The guy isn't a star, but I think he's a great fit next to Gobert since he can stretch the floor, pass and decently defend. Even if Lyles develops, Gobert, Lyles and Olynyk have enough minutes to share.
- Sign Yogi Farrell to help with the PG duties. He showed a ton as a rookie late in the year. He plays great defense, plays hard and shot the 3 over 40%. He's one of those guys who will earn a spot. Reminds me of Patty Mills. I think he's a guy that teams will shy away from but we would have no reason not to try to see if he's the real deal. The guy hit 9 threes in one game.
- Sign Jonathon Simmons to a long term deal. He is a SG version of Kawhi Leonard due to his passion, fight, and versatility. At worst, he's a Tony Allen for us for years. Lock him up.
- Trade Favors. I would target a young player or a draft pick. Y'all probably know that I don't think he's a good long term fit next to Gobert. If Hayward leaves, I don't want to be desperate to keep any asset at any cost. Overpaying to keep Favors would be a massive mistake. We should get him healthy, get his value up and trade him before the deadline to a contender missing a big.
- Trade Joe Johnson. I love the guy, but he would not serve us well to keep if we don't have Hayward. His value is high after that playoffs. I could see us trading him to somebody like the Cavs for Channing Frye, a young player and a draft pick.
- Trade Diaw. He has a non-guaranteed contract which makes him very, very valuable. He would be put into any deal with Favors and/or Johnson to sweeten the deal.
- If we can't get a free agent target, we could look to add players from teams who need to shed. Leonard and Harkless from Portland come to mind.
PG Exum, Yogi, Neto
SG Simmons, Burks
SF Hood
PF Olynyk, Lyles, Bolomboy
C Gobert
Don't forget that we would have the #24, #30 and 2nd rounders unless we use them to trade up or get another player. We would build on youth, potential and hustle. We would also bring in players or players with assets from the JJ and Favors deals.
This would be my plan. What about yours?
