What's new

The Jazz have acquired the 13th pick and select Donovan Mitchell

I meant to say landing/taking off with an internal rotation of the feet where the toes are pointed towards each other and closer than the heels. I mean this in general for anytime you are landing or taking off. This leads to knee injuries.

That part is really a shooting technique thing. Since you rotate the hip to enable the shooting shoulder to be aligned towards the hoop, it makes sense to roatate your foot since your aim is to have as little tension as possible so balance is at its peak. The toes pointing towards each other is a result of how you "break", keep momentum. You do the 1-2 usually out of a dribble motion or in a situation where you want attacking a close-out to be a possibility, so your trail foot's toes are pointing towards the hoop. When you 1-2 step into a 3 the decision to actually shoot and not use the 2nd step as the gather step and continue dribbling the ball is a split second thing, where you either align the lead foot in the direction you wanna move or you use it to adjust your body towards the hoop for the shot and said "turn" motion happens. Since your trail foot was pointing towards the hoop, he keeps that way (pivot foot stationary) and toes are closer than heels.

I'm pretty much picturing him as a cross between Dwyane Wade and Russell Westbrook.

Don't forget Mitchell is almost 21(basically typial age group of juniors) for whatever that's worth. I like him quite a bit too, but it's not like he's a puppy who turned 19 a month ago.
Giannis is turning 23 this december and Mitchell turns 21 almost 2 months before Devin Booker does.

This age thing is so overrated. Old school players like Stockton went to college for 4 years before being drafted. Yes, high school players are more advanced; they play a much more robust schedule outside of HS than players in the previous eras of basketball. So 1-and-done rookies might be at an advanced skill level than previous generations. But to think Mitchell can't make huge leaps is also erroneous. Just look at Hayward at 21 (couple of years in the league) vs. what he is today. Or George Hill. Mitchell committed late to basketball. And his work ethic is going to carry him a long ways. I think he eats up everything Quin teaches him. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if he's getting major rotation minutes very early.

I didn't say he can't make huge leaps. I just said statistically it's not that likely and advised to avoid unrealistic expectations since the names Westbrook and Wade were mentioned. Maybe starting late means his learning curve is steeper right now, we'll see how long that keeps that way.

He is good, but he's not THAT good. Sheesh. Don't believe the hype. I figure amarcus smart defender with some Alec Burks spring in him. A premier 3 and D guy. Westbrook mating with Wad... Let's not be silly!

I doubt any of us expect that. Colton using hyperbole. Me too.
Personally, I believe Mitchell can be an all-star caliber player. Will he actually be an all-star? Probably not; there are too many great wings and PG's in the West. But I see him as an integral part of a 3-man rotation at PG/SG. Expand that out to include Hill, Exum, Mitchell, Hayward, Hood and Ingles. That would be a pretty solid set of players to cover the 1-3 spots.

What I liked the most was watching a pre-draft interview with him and him stating how he just "got it" a few months ago and "everything clicked". He knows what he can do and confidence just oozes out of this kid.

According to reports, Donovan didn't know he was being traded to the Jazz when he got on the stage. Then when he sat down for his interview he saw it on the monitors and fist pumped, because he wanted to play for the Jazz.

We already knew that on draft night.

I mentioned how Devin Booker fist pumped when we passed on him and Donovan Mitchell fist pumped when we traded for him.

I think this repeated story about Booker's fist pump at the draft is kinda exaggerated. His teammate at UK just got drafted, maybe it was a sign of happiness for Lyles being drafted?

Don't know about that, but I heard he dropped to the ground and started running sideways in a circle, yelling woohoo. Something like this:

With a good chunk of Michael Jordan too

Some highlights

His visit to Utah was eye-opening. Ever since he first stopped in Salt Lake City, Mitchell has been effusive about the state, and it hasn't just been in front of a camera.

"This was the only workout where Donovan texted me and said, 'Momma, this place is amazing,'" Nicole Mitchell said. "He showed me a picture from the airplane, like this snowcapped mountain. He was just overjoyed."

"I just told him congratulations, and especially for being selected by the Utah Jazz," Griffith said. "I told him it was a great organization and he'll enjoy it. They're all about winning."

Mitchell's reply: "I'm so happy I could cry."

He had ways of ceding the spotlight to show his leadership as well. During one tournament for his club team The City, Mitchell had to come off the bench for missing practice. His coach Arjay Perovic told him if the team made a run, Mitchell would start again.

After The City won its first few games, Mitchell was poised to start. But before the game that morning, Mitchell met privately with Perovic about concerns that the player who was starting over him wouldn't respond well to being replaced. Mitchell thought it would be better for the team if he kept coming off the bench.

"I was so emotional when he said that," Perovic said. "Here I have a 15-year-old young man putting his ego after the team, this classic way of leading by example. He was so mature to understand that."

With Mitchell coming off the bench, The City won the tournament.

2.30 min.

Edit: OK, no fist pump, but he was clearly surprised and excited to be traded to Utah.

Mitchell said he saw that he was traded to the Jazz when he was walking off the stage and down the stairs. so if there was a fist pump, that's when it would have happened. obviously the highlights were going when he was walking down the stairs so that video wouldn't show it.
