This article is about the turmoil Kidd caused in New Jersey, but it also talks about the huge profits and losses some teams had last year. There was a memo sent out to the league that talked about the profits and losses of all the teams this year.

Highlights from the article
Lakers were the most portable at 100 million!
The Nets were the other extreme losing $144 million!
The Jazz were listed as the 7th most portable franchise, right behind the spurs. It doesn't give numbers for the Spurs or the Jazz but it does give the Celtics, who were the 4th most portable, making 33 million.

^^
Barely at the cap, but still with high attendance. Millers should bank some of the excess for the next 4-5 years when they will be up against the tax.

You can get a decent range for the Jazz profits from the article. It mentions that Oklahoma City is 5th with a profit of $29 million. It also mentions Milwaukee made $14.8 million, but doesn't give Milwaukee's rank (would be 9th at best). So the Jazz profits are between $29 million and $14.8 million. I'd guess it's closer to the high end of that than the low end...

all while going through one of the worst seasons in recent franchise history. incredible.

I don't think they will get very close to the tax any time soon. The revenue sharing in the next couple years is going to be HHHUUUGGGEEE for the Jazz. With the new TV deals coming in the next few years the Jazz could be getting 30+ million in just revenue sharing, they get luxury take money on top of that too.

This is all really great news for the Jazz because it means the millers are making money.

For sure, but to clarify a bit on the new revenue sharing -- Miller does not have to keep payroll down to remain this profitable. Judging by this article, they very likely did not get a full share of the revenue this last season. They are capped by the CBA at $10,000,000 profit. Anything over that and they do not get a check cut by the league.

This new CBA gives the small market teams A LOT more flexibility.

They made the money because we paid so little in salaries this year. That was the clippers strategy for all but the last few years. The clippers were the most profitable franchise in the NBA some years when they were one of the worst teams in the league.

The LT is no longer a sharing pool. It is "to be determined" how it is spent by the league. Charity, possibly taking care of ex-players pensions, that kind of stuff is more likely.

The revenue sharing pool is a brand new pool. Every team pays into it based on their revenues, and the league cuts checks out according to need. Excesses are returned.

you also risk no one attending games when you lose, is my point.

Plus low attendance numbers for the Jazz. Hope this puts that nonsense of the team leaving to rest. Jazz will never leave Utah.

This is great news. Last year and likely this year will be the most losing we've had to suffer through in the modern era. I have no problem with the millers making money through the losing... its part of the natural cycle of rebuilding. I don't want them to short cut it. Last year they bought the draft pick that turned into Gobert, so I don't think their non-spending is hurting us right now.

Now OKC who made huge changes because of financial concerns only to turn a large profit might deserve some wrath from their fans and players. We aren't there yet. When it is prudent to spend again I believe the Millers will do so.

Yeah I thought of the same thing. A season that sucked to watch indoors and yet the franchise stands 7th? Man, the Millers should hand out free merchandise to the people of Utah on an annual basis.

Did the season suck because they didn't spend money... or was it because that is where we are in the rebuild? We had low attendance for Utah, but overall wasn't that bad. The Millers are great owners and fans should recognize that. NBA teams are allowed to make money.

Sorry, I meant in 4-5 years down the road they will be close to the tax IF they try to keep everyone: Favors, Hayward, Kanter, Burks, Burke and Gobert all with new contracts, Exum on a #5 pick rookie deal, a likely top-10 pick next season, etc. Even if they don't exceed the tax, the profit margin will be slim.

They do tons of stuff. A giant annual thanksgiving dinner for the homeless, the Jr. Jazz was voted best NBA Youth Program this year, free stuff (balls, frisbees, ...) thrown out at games, tons of promos all over Utah, Exum and Hood just ran NBA drills at the Utah Special Olympics...

The Jazz give tons back to their community. They have a very strong relationship with the community.

****. What else is there to do in Salt Lake City? I think the Millers are super lucky that things to do in SLC are nil.

It isn't that there is nothing else to do in Utah it is that a very large portion of the public look for family friendly fun and the Jazz play into that. Also being the only proffesional team in Utah of the Big 4 (NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL) gives them a littel bit of a monopoly on sports entertainment.
