The question to ask is whether the Jazz are better than Portland last year.

Burke
Burks
Hayward
Kanter
Favors

vs

Lillard
Mathews
Hickson
Batum
Aldridge

With the Benches about the same...

Portland-33 Wins Utah-???

My guess is 29

Honestly our bench is probably worst than Portland last year and all of our starters are younger then Portlands!!

Yeah are starters are going to have some growing pains that Portland didn't have to go through. But I can see the Jazz playing close to .500 basketball after the allstar break. The reason I didn't do lower than 29 is because Portland straight up tanked the last 20 games of the season.

And so will we!!!!

We had a coach back then. I think this team is POTENTIALLY more talented than that team. But we are far less experienced across the board and don't have the coach that was great at getting players to play above themselves by playing the system.
That team had some solid experienced talent, led by AK, Hapring, Arroyo, etc. I also think a KEY difference is Sloan had offensive and defensive systems in place. Corbin does not. This team will be starting from scratch, having suffered under the "Alfense" model for 2+ years. Outside of Hayward and Evans, none of our players have known anything different. It's going to take a while, even for talented but inexperienced players, to learn new offense and defense schemes.

This team directly resembles the Jazz team of Deron Williams's rookie season. With the exception of maybe Kirilenko, the whole team consisted of former bench players with a lot of potential. The only two differences here is this team is elite defensively and that team was elite offensively, and of course there's the whole Sloan vs. Corbin argument.

Lol, wut? There is an argument?

Well there's not an argument between the two coaches abilities, but Corbin definitely isn't as bad as Jazzfanz deems him.
The dude is close to .500 with changing rosters constantly, and a lockout shortened season to start.

People are way too confident in the Jazz team this year. I mean we just signed John Lucas III as our backup point! There is no guarentee that Burke is any good, and his summerleague was horrible though that doesn't mean a whole lot. Kanter has had some amazing games, but hasn't proven himself to be able to play 30+ minutes a game consistently. It is a huge jump from 15 minutes per game to starter. That is fringe player to starter. Whole different world. Favors played about 22 minutes a game last year, he will have a bit of a jump as well, but not as much. But with him you have to worry about foul trouble. He's going to have major foul trouble this year, and who are we supposed to play behind him? Gobert? maybe. Biedrins? no. Evans? Maybe for some cool dunks. We don't have much else happening on our bench either. Burks will be solid, and maybe a good 6th man. I would seriously be surprised if we won 30 games. The Jazz are going to be a bottom 3 in the west and one of the 8 worst teams in the league.

You're starting to sound like an ESPN beat writer at this point.

How is John Lucas III any worse than Earl Watson?

Of course this team has some growing up to do this season, and this team is completely unproven.
These things mean absolutely nothing.

At first glance, 30 games seems like a decent bet, but looking back on last years NBA standings, I'm not so sure. The Washington Wizards won 29 games. Granted, that was in the East, but if that group of guys can win 29, I would at least think this Jazz squad can push 30. Making me even more nervous was the fact that the Bobcats still mustered 21 wins and that's one of the worst rosters I've ever seen.
Washington had an exceptional pg with some experiece and a rookie wing scorer to go with bigs who had much more playing experience than the Jazz. Charlotte is a good comparison.

The Jazz will be mighty young and raw, but those guys are HUNGRY. You can win 15 games in the NBA alone by just wanting it more than your opponents. Soooo many teams take nights off in the NBA.
And the Utah Jazz have historically had a home court advantage.

I think Tank City is happening and I expect the Jazz to be in the top half of the Lottery, but I'm guessing with 31 or 32 wins.
If not top 5 this season will have been a waste.

The question to ask is whether the Jazz are better than Portland last year.
Good comparison, the answer is no. Lilliard was better than Trey is. and Portland had more experience at every other position.

Eh, maybe. That is definitely one to think about. My initial reaction would be that the 04 Jazz had better spacing with Okur, and some experinece with AK and Harpring, but I would like to think about it more.

Good comparison. This year's Jazz team shouldn't be as good as last year's Blazers team. 29 wins seems about right.

We will win at 33 or more. Other teams will tank, and well keep 'developing our talent'

I really think that we are not going to be that bad. Sure, our bench is total crap but the fact that our starters are so young gives us more minutes playing the starters. We will be a very fun team to watch. I believe that Corbin is the main thing that will hold us back next year from really surprising a lot of people. I still think we have a shot at about 40-45 wins and even the 8th seed next year. I think the first month of the season will be rough but we will really start to improve from there on. And if we don't win a lot and totally suck, we will at least get to see our young guys play a lot of minutes and not waste away on the bench behind Big Al, Foye, and Marvin.

These comparisons are made completely on last years play, which is comparing bench/role players with starters of last year.

Kanter/Favors/Hayward/Burks were on PER or even better than those teams players last year.
