THE MORNING AFTeR

Dr. Jones

In pursuit of #9
Contributor
I just woke up and my very first thought was, "Wow.. my head hurts."

Followed immediately by, "Wow.. what an amazing, franchise-changing, draft night."

Followed by, "Okay... wtf happened, again??"

So, here's some recaps for any of you whose head is swimming like mine was;

~ The Jazz ended the draft night with 3 new players - TREY BURKE, RUDY GOBERT, and RALPH NADER (Raul Neto).

That is a draft of epic proportions. Yes, it was a weak draft, but the JAZZ FO raped it. Killed it. A+ to the whole FO.

Random thoughts;

- Dalamon ... Good on ya. Pimping Burke waaaaaay before pimping Burke was cool. Shout out!!! Now, PLEASE stop referring to him as Black Jesus. TIA.
- Sepanol ... Mentioning Raul here 2 years ago was pretty Neto. Kudos.
- To my sources... they were DEAD ON. I knew the Jazz were making their way for Burke as priority #1 with CJ as backup... at the moment Zeller was taken (not sure why, at this point), I was told Burke was 'on.' I was texting with UGLI and I got so excited about 14/21 for Burke (I got the news about 5 minutes before it was announced).. I simply said to UGLI, "THAT's the TRADE!" THat. Was. Fun.

Now my head is already swimming with trying to figure out how good/bad we'll be next year... for the next draft. lol
But, I'll refrain and just enjoy the moment.

Ladies and Gentlemen, our new on-court LEADER.

Weak draft or not, that was one of the most fun I have ever had watching a draft. Talk about movement and crazy stuff from the very first pick. I think all of our heads are/were spinning just trying to keep track of what was going on.

The thought I woke up this morning was we need to turn this team over to Burke.

This is a "tank" year. No one wants to see ANYONE brought in to play in front of Burke.

Listening to all these Burke interviews he wants it. He wants a ring, and he wants to win.

I think he has a big chance to win ROY if we turn the reins over to him day 1.

I couldn't agree more. The fans need this momentum to continue into the season. The team needs to gel together. And, it needs to be seen, right out of the gate, the support that Burke has as the new leader. Young or not, Burke is CLUTCH.. and that means he can handle this. This team will take plenty of lumps.. but I want to see the 'core' share the ups and downs, together, asap.

Wow what a crazy night. I wake up and now the Jazz have Neto. How the heck did we get him? I was slightly disappointed to give up both picks to get Burke because I also wanted a big guy and then Lindsey turns around and grabs one of my favorite guys at 27 no less. Yes that is right at 27.. unbelievable.

The best news is that this seems to signal rebuild mode and the end of an era of mediocrity. I don't know much about Neto but what I've heard I like. Besides the Jazz needed two PGs, is he coming over this year and can he shoot the ball. Just an A++. I can't wait for summer league.

It's mind-numbingly epic and I'm impressed beyond words with the FO.
We got Neto by trading a future 2nd for #47 in this draft. Great pickup.

Gobert looks like a fun project too. Some of his videos are promising.

Anyone know more about his defense? I've heard various things. Hopefully he can use that size, and focus on defense FIRST.

I still cannot believe what just transpired today at the draft.

I am still shocked.

I have to admit I was really into Burke when I knew we had a chance at grabbing him at around #16 pick at the end of last year. I watched almost all of Michigan game and really saw the growth in him into the great leader he is today. Then when he did so well at the NCAA tournament, it was really bittersweet for me as I knew we'd have no chance with him.

I remember having a conversation with Bluenote on this board and telling him how sad I was that we couldn't get Burke.

Then Schroeder happened - and he was really our substitute for who we shouldn't wish for (Burke) for fear of disappointment. Props to DAL for sticking with it through and through til the bitter end.

Moving on to today, Burke has shown the same poise that I expected from him (see video below). He wasn't overly ecstatic about being with the Jazz, but he seems to be quietly content and excited by the challenge of leading our young group of guys. What I love about him are:

- A smorgasbord of offensive repertoire, spot up, off the dribble, leaning shot, and a floater (which I don't think McCollum has).

- Great playmaking ability - team first mentality

- No non-sense lead by example attitude that hopefully will permeate the whole team

- The "Hunger" to become the Best player that Trey Burke can be (John Beilein's quote, word for word, except the Hunger part).

- Dare I say it? Do we have a near Stockton/Malone in Burke/Kanter/Favors?

A great, great day to be a Utah Jazz Fan.

I was listening to ESPN coverage in the car, they were interviewing burke asking him how he would fit in with Miny and he was saying how excited he was to be staying close to home.

Then while he was in the middle of saying it they interrupted him and said hey you've been traded to Utah. He was shocked and his response was less than overwhelming. Tough spot for a young kid.

His dad is his agent. I don't think they were prepared.

I wouldn't read into that too much - when he has time to absorb the whole thing and realizes the PG position is wide open on this team then he'll change his tune. If he hasn't already.

What I want to read now is reports of Favors, Kanter, Evans, Hayward, Burke, Burks, Carroll, Neto, Gobert...all working together at P3 and with Sloan and Malone.

Yeah, this NBA policy of not announcing trades right away is annoying enough to us fans, but is far WORSE for the players involved. Creates many an awkward moment. Very bad policy, IMO...

Agreed. you can tell he would feel that he's not 100% thrilled to be with the Wolves, playing next to Rubio is absolutely the WORST possible pick.

He had to wait about 25 before the trade was actually confirmed... that's rough....

I also think that this is a huge win for the players already on the Jazz roster. How can Kanter, Favors, Hayward and Burks not be thrilled with this? The team got younger, the focus is now on them and it appears they will be given the time and tools to succeed.

100% agree

I was gonna open a new thread, but I decided to post it here.

YAY!
Haha

loved burke's kk biff. aren't all white dudes in the nba actually the same person?

i was listening to his interviews last night and he seemed pretty grounded. said he was excited to begin his professional career in slc because he will be free from great distractions because its such a good family city (although i don't think there is too much more trouble to get into in minneapolis). but overall, he did not sound like he wanted to be playing long-term in utah. hopefully that changes as our fan base embraces him and he experiences the overall culture of the organization. i'm nowgonna raise a glass in hopes that ty corbin doesn't turn the kid away from playing here for a while.

Man some of you guys should be detectives with the way you can pull out amazing conclusions from simple interviews. Nothing about Burke's interviews suggested trepidation about playing in Utah long term. Really, he was excited, focused, thankful and eager. The only thing that I can see possibly giving you that impression was when he said "I look forward to playing in Utah for ... for the next however long" (or something like that) ... but that was hardly intended to be a slight against Utah, more just being modest and understanding how quickly things can change
