Is it necessary to be baptized to be saved?

Where do you get the idea of how to attain the highest degree of heavenly glory? I'm just not quite sure where that's found at.

Thanks!

Paul talk about three heavens...

2. I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven. (New Testament, 2 Corinthians, Chapter 12)

Information on the qualifications of the obtaining the highest degree of heaven is found in "The Doctrine and Covenants" a book of modern day revelations given to Joseph Smith and other recent Prophets of our church!!

What are the reasonings behind the idea that you need to be baptized?

Baptism by immersion is symbolic of our commitment to Heavenly Father. That we agree to follow his commandments and laws. A covenant if you will. This also leads to the gift of the Holy Ghost.

If it's symbolism, then why is it a necessary ingredient to being saved?

Also, where does it say that baptism leads to the gift of the Holy Spirit? (I'm assuming you're referencing the Holy Spirit when you say the Holy Ghost, correct me if I'm wrong.)

Yes holy ghost =holy spirit in my post. After baptism is the LDS faith there is a blessing that confers the Gift of the Holy Ghost.

Edit: it is you making a covenant with the Lord. It also cleanses you of your previous sins and makes it possible for us to repent and be forgiven of future sins.

I guess what I'm saying is that I understand your thoughts on the process, I'm just curious as to where you're getting them from. As in biblical evidence, or book of Mormon evidence if it's in there. Thanks!

Oh you want scriptural references...

Some real fast references are:

Acts 2:38
Luke 3:3
3rd Nephi 31:17
Alma 7:14

I guess I'm just more of the opinion that baptism is symbolic. It's a public showing of you stating what you believe in. I certainly think that everybody should be baptized, but I don't think I would say that if you've never been baptized, you aren't saved.

There are definitely some ordinances in the LDS church that if you don't get done you're not moving up. But of course that isn't the end of it. I know plenty of LDS, myself included, you have all their ordinances done but don't live as they should. Therefore, the ordinances become moot.

Repped for pretending to be human.

Feel like I have to speak out here: how many people has ANY missionary "converted" to the LDS Church? The answer is ZERO.
A missionary doesn't convert anyone. The desire to live a different life is reached by that person and his/her belief in a higher power.

Missionaries are not called to baptize; they are called to preach the gospel (or "good news" in biblical terms). If a missionary judges his success (or lack thereof) by number of baptisms, he/she has missed the mark.

I was thinking the Phillipines specifically.

anybody here who served in the Philippines besides me???

Philippines still has a very high "inactivity" rate. . . . people who stop coming to meetings after a few months.

well, we probably have the same level of participation as the Catholics. One filipino "church" that was actually a knock-off of the LDS, the Iglesia ni Cristo, uses a pegboard in the foyer. Members have to show their presence in meetings by hanging a name tag on the their peg. I was told if someone didn't come, there were folks who went out to see why not.

While I did participate in a good number of new baptism I focused more on strengthening what was already there. I made it a point to bring at least 1 inactive member to church every Sunday. Also just being visible being a contributing member of the local community with active and inacctive Mormons.
