The Official Get Well Jody Genessey Thread

In 2011, the average sports reporter made approx $45,000. That includes cities like NYC and LA. The median was $36,000.

You factor in the time those guys spend on the road, and his salary sucks. I'd bet Genesy is making about $40,000 a year. His hourly wage for 40 hrs a week would be $19/hr. Not bad, bud not living with mass amounts of abundance either.

These guy's life isn't nearly as glamorous as we think it is.

There is a reason why Gunther is on the radio. Who else wants to work for $30,000 a year?

Sorry for keeping the conversation away from the topic of the thread, but it should also be noted that the beat writers fly commercial. They're not the team's chartered flights like the TV and radio broadcasters.

Salt Lake Trib went through 4 beat writers in about 6 years IIRC ... that's quite a big turnover considering all the perks that come with the job and stuff.

Yeah, there are no perks. Bad travel, bad hours, bad food, bad pay. It is hard to do that job knowing you could make the same, if not more money with better travel, hours, health, etc doing a "normal" job.

Unless you hit it big time, it is a rough profession. And even then, there are easier ways to make money than beat reporter. Props to all who do it. Being a beat reporter/radio personality does not contribute to a positive mental health.

Unless you are aleady loaded and single, no attachments and not doing it for the money. You get to travel and watch games for free. New cities every night. Talk to players. Get close to the action.

That is definitely cool. Every man's dream. The problem is, there are a lot easier ways to make $35,000 a year. Awesome job when you are 25. Making $35,000 a year and gone 1/2 the year at 35, 40? That's rough. I get why that doesn't add to his mental health.

It would be tough to do that job, be around millionaires (players) all the time, have a family at home and still feel good about yourself. It probably sucks to work your butt off for 17 bucks and hour and see 19, 20, 21, 22 year olds bringing home paychecks of $1,000,000 every two weeks (Favors). That has got to suck. Heck, Evans is getting paychecks of $150,000 every two weeks.

Again, I think I agree with Joe, this discussion has gone totally sideways, and if Jody does read it and it isn't helping, let's delete it. Jody does an awesome job and I love his work. I'm grateful for his work and the time and effort he puts into it. If he left, the Jazz would be losing a great person to cover the team.

That's why I said "loaded" meaning you've got at least a million stashed away in term deposit so you don't need the $35k. You're just doing it for kicks.
