Over the past 2 weeks I have finally done what I've never fully been able to commit to. I've started eating healthy. And honestly, 2 weeks in, I feel Great!! The reward from my diet has been so staggering to me that I feel I will never go back. Now, I must say that my diet before was poor. drank a lot of Mountain Dew, dew on the grass of the gods, and probably ate out 4-5 times a week. I've completely went cold turkey on all of those things and it's been awesome! My joints feel better, I have had more energy, my body feels better when I work out, and, honestly, my performance at work has improved. I even feel likes the circulation throughout my body is better.

Some of the changes I have made, specifically:

I eat blueberries every day. Wild blueberries are the best if you can find them. What's interesting about blueberries is that in case studies, even people with healthy diets, saw increased health benefits when they added blueberries to their diet. I'm a believer! I'd highly recommend you read this article:

https://www.lifeextension.com/magazine/2006/2/report_blueberries/Page-01

Scholarly work. Very interesting.

Additionally, I have been eating Salmon 2 two times a week. I'd recommend Wild Alaskan. You can do the research but you'll find that's consistently regarded as perhaps the healthiest. Salmon is incredibly good for your brain.

I use to snack mindlessly on things like chips and candy bars, but instead I've switched to bananas, carrots, almonds, and instead of drinking soda, I have switched to drinking Izze's. It's 70% pure fruit juice with sparkling water. You can get a 24 pack at Costco for like 13 bucks. I think they taste great and I do know there are better beverage choices from a nutrition standpoint, but I wasn't totally ready to give up soda and this is a much better alternative than Mountain Dew or Coke. Lot less sugar and the other crap in soda that causes weight gain and inflammation in your body, which has been linked to practically every significant illness a person can have.

Another thing I've done is I've added Greek yogurt and eggs into my diet. Eggs are very interesting. I read a book by Americas brain Doctor Eric Braverman called younger brain sharper mind. In it he talks in detail about how eggs actually increase 3 of the 4 essential chemicals of brain Chemistry, Namely acetylcholine, Dopamine and serotonin. All of these are incredibly important for different reasons. I'll detail that later. Additionally, eggs are natures perfect protein, egg yolk, though previously thought bad for us, is very good. It's full of dietary fiber and contains Choline which coats the electrical network of your brain and makes it so the power cords of your brain, so to speak, do not burn up. It's great for memory and linking ideas together.

Greek yogurt is also very good. It boosts brain power.

I've also been drinking more water which is an obvious must.

Anyway, if you have any suggestions please share, or any questions I'll answer to the best of my ability. I'll continually post in regards to my experiences along the way.

For those of you interested in foods we can implement in our diet that will affect brain chemistry in an optimal fashion, I made this about a year and a half ago. This comes from Eric Braverman's book Younger Brain Sharper Mind. Hope it helps!

Sufficient levels of GABA=
Organized memory, specifically verbal memory, focus. mental stability and calmness.

Chemical imbalance of GABA leads to headaches, palpitations, seizures, and anxiety.

GABA FOODS
Bananas and Broccoli

Serotonin
Visual memory and perception. Provides a healing, nourishing, satisfied feeling to the brain and body. Stimulates the growth of new neuronal connections. Sleep deeply and think rationally. Better mood, sleep, and happiness.

Insufficient levels of Serotonin leads to:
Depression, sleep disorders, eating disorders, sensory processing dysfunction.

Foods that increase serotonin:
Egg
Cottage cheese
Turkey
Chicken
Avocado
Pork
Wheat Germ

Acetylcholine
Memory, improved processing speed and immediate memory function. Creativity and feel good.

Loss of acetylcholine results in:
Decreased brain speed, brain fog, disjointed thinking.

Foods that boost acetylcholine
Termeric
Eggs
Yogurt (Greek Recommended)
Broccoli
Peanuts and peanut butter
Cabbage
Fish
Almonds

Dopamine
Stimulates working memory, and enables you to push yourself toward accomplishments. Goal setting and long term planning. Abstract thought.

Loss of dopamine results in:
Decreased brain power leading to fatigue, addiction, and loss of attention

Foods that increase Dopamine
Cottage Cheese
Egg
Walnuts
Yogurt (Greek recommended)
Chicken
Soy
Granola
Turkey
Pork
(Water is essential for foods to work. be well hydrated)

I've recently been diagnosed with a pretty serious illness and losing some weight will be helpful in extending my life expectancy. I meet with a dietician next week, but I've been trying to eat better for a little while now. It's tough because I'm poor (stupid medical bills) and eating healthy is expensive, but I am trying to incorporate the same suggestions as you. If only I could make myself like Greek yogurt . . .

My guess is that none of this will make a noticeable difference to your health or longevity. Studies that show the benefits or harm of [blank] are dime a dozen. About the only completely reliable data is that smoking and morbid obesity are bad for you, while being active and having a balanced vegetables rich diet is good for you
Until the research environment in this field changes, I'll continue to ignore the supposed effects of individual foods.

So after my recent vacation trip to Dominican Republic 2 month ago I decided to change some things around as well. That 7 days of beach, free beer and all you can eat free food made me feel so heavy and useless after I went to my first soccer game back home. I am turning 45 this year so I decided it is time to switch things around a bit and start taking better care of my body. Quit alcohol and coffee completely, decreased amount of bread and grains in general and increased amount of fish, beef, eggs, fruits and nuts. Feeling great so far, going to the gym regularly, playing soccer and basketball and not missing a thing. Well to be honest I crave beer a little...so no promises that I will stay abstinent forever.
To me it looks like adding more protein and cutting down unhealthy carbs is the key. And obviously if you drink coffee and alcohol regularly it can't be good either:)

I think what you are missing Siro is the benefit to how you feel and how eating healthy affects your outlook on life. I know for a fact I "feel" better. And honestly, everyone wants to feel good. Fundamentally, when you are only eating out and drinking a lot of Soda and Alcohol, your mood is affected. The way your brain functions is affected in subtle ways that impact behavior.

And read the study on blueberries i provided above. Just from a scientific standpoint, with empirical data as the force here, brain function was enhanced over the course of weeks when a person ate blueberries daily. What we are talking about here is being our best selves. Nutrition contributes to that.

I'm sorry to hear about the illness you were recent diagnosed with. As far as the Greek yogurt goes, have you tried Chobani? They have some very tasty types. I'll send pictures so you can see why I mean. You can buy in bulk at Costco for a reasonable price too.

I'm definitely on the "everything in moderation" side, but I don't drink alcohol or smoke. I did start drinking coffee 2 years ago and don't see myself quitting that anytime soon, but I counter balance that by drinking a lot of milk. ;)

Ugh, sorry to hear that JazzGal. :(
Good luck with the dietician.

I'm not adding that stress to my life. I think I would develop a brain aneurysm if I worried about my brain chemicals. Stress it's a KILLER!

I'd say a good start is limiting purchased meals to once a week. If you can actually eat home-made food 3 times a day, at least 6 times a week, and it isn't the same **** every day-- I think you'll be off to an insane start.

And we're talking home-made here. None of that pre-made warm up in the microwave ****.

And that is the tough part for me. I hate cooking and preparing food and do all I can to avoid it. I'm sure that would be the best change I could make.
