The reason Portland is going after Matthews

I have a friend who worked for the Blazers for several years who got canned last year. According to his friends still in the organization, the Blazers are hoping to sign Matthews to finalize their deal with the Hornets for CP3. The high initial salary for the first year is so the salaries can match up.
So the background story goes, for those who don't know Paul Allen has cancer, and entered his second round of Chemo. He has been told, he has tops 2 years and close to around 1 year to live. PA wants more than anything to get CP3 and win a championship this year. Apparently, KP told him he was unwilling to sell the farm to get CP3 and when talk trades were hot and heavy, the Blazers advising Dr. reviewed CP3s knee records and told him it was a no go. KP told PA he wouldn't do the trade so he got the ax. The Hornets want Batum, Bayless, 3 future 1st round draft picks, Oden (one year left + needed for salary) and Matthews which the Hornets like. Portland would also pick up Posey. The numbers work and makes somewhat sense if CP3s knee really is messed up.

My friend has been wrong before. He told me all sorts of crazy trade ideas that he though would happen that never did. I know of two other people who have confirmed PA's health situation and also said that once he dies, his sister, who is the apparent heir to the throne along w/ Vulcan, wants to sell the team/ move it to Seattle. Winning a championship would increase the value of the team so his cronies are all for it.

Take it for what it's worth. The Hornets could very well pull out of the deal or the Jazz could match the offer. Anyways, I thought it was interesting and worthy of sharing even if nothing comes to fruition, which I don't think anything will.

I don't know if this is true or not, but Portland will never win a championship while Paul Allen is alive. The Lakers and now the Heat will be champions over the next 4-5 years.

That will be a great day if the Blazers move to Seattle. Serves them right.

Can this even happen. Doesn't Wes become untradeable until the middle of December or something like that?

Haven't the Blazers shopped Fernandez before? They may also be trying to force a trade on us.
Still, this is plausable as there doesn't appear to be a starting role for Matthews in Portland. Obviously that's a lot of $$$ to pay a backup, but who knows... At the very least, an interesting scenario.

The more I think about it, this doesn't seem so outlandish. Although I tend to doubt Wes is being signed to then be packaged. If this was true, it would simply mean the Blazers think (know) they can get CP3. They certainly have the assets that would be attractive to NO. Batum/Bayless/Odom, and picks would tempt me if I was New Orleans. Maybe the Blazers know they can pull the trigger on that deal, but want to secure a wing they like before they do it. I don't know. But there's something definitely off about them wanting Wes at all. They have too much depth at his position.

This is lame but I'll play. If the Blazers want CP3 I would think the Hornuts would be asking for Roy!

I think Roy actually defeats the purpose. It wouldn't make any sense for them to trade star for star. They're right back in the same place, and arguably a little worse since I think CP3 is more valuable than Roy. But that's debatable. Look what they get back in that deal: Oden (who could be a cornerstone center if he ever stays healthy); Bayless (a solid PG prospect with upside and former high draft pick); and Batum (a guy just about everybody is high on.) That's 3/5ths of a starting rotation that is already better than what they have, all locked in on rookie deals, and all have trade value. Their lineup then looks like this:

Collison/Bayless
Thornton/Stojakovic (Pondexter in the draft)
Batum/Wright/Posey
West/Songaila (Brackins in the draft)
Oden/Okafor

I think that's a better team than the CP3 model. Stojakovic drops off the books after this season which helps. The killer is Okafor. Not sure if NO does it unless they know they can unload Okafor somewhere. But I might live with that problem if I was them. Because one Stojakovic is gone, they have a really young, talented team with no bad contracts.

If this is true at all, then the Hornets will be looking to unload Okafor. Here's where Boozer's trade exception may come into play it this plays out at all.

And we are dying to get him? Okafur? At that price? He is the definition of overpaid IMO. Just another lucky 7 footer.

The claim that Allen only has 1 or 2 years left to live sounds like total bs to me. The survival rate for non-hodgkins lymphoma is 70% for all people and probably much higher for someone with as much money as Paul Allen. In the reports I looked up Allen says he is confident he will beat the disease. If the cancer had progressd to the point where doctors felt like death was certain then he would have weeks, maybe months left to live, not years.

Paul Allen dying? Wishful thinking. He's the ****ing Antichrist and it'll take a lot more than this **** to kill him.

this only makes sense if Portland is willing to part with Roy to get Paul, thus Wes getting those starter minutes. otherwise you cant trade Wes till like Dec 15th.

No, I did. I found it amusing how he poses one example of a couple all-time greats who were renowned for their work ethic and health, as if Deron's pudgy butt will hold up just the same.

Oh, ok. So you did. That said, isn't it ironic how you call Williams pudgy, when....
