The Servant

MJ isn't MJ.

He is Air Jordan. That is his nickname. His name shortened to initials is MJ. Your initials aren't a nickname.

How 'bout captain marvel?

I agree that some nicknames does not get too far, but INITIALS are not nicknames Considering the concept of nba players' nicknames. Big E is a nick name. EB is not.

Michael had several ones. Many have been mentioned in this thread.
His real and undying original nick is Air.
Then he was being called his majesty in the last bulls years.
But you can also hear everyone from his coach to teammates calling him mj. But no coach or player calls someone by his nick except the exceptions like Magic.
Nicknames do not have the necessity of being the name used the most.

You are a tard.

big dipper/stilt

these are worthy nicknames. KD has a good nickname in durantula, but it never really was pushed by media or marketing like these notable nicknames. why? because of KD.

kobe - go look at kobe's shoe. black mamba this. mamba that. snake skin themes. venomenon.
lebron - it's all about 'king'. lion logo mark. crown initial. etc.

KD?

you can call him slim reaper all you want, but if KD doesn't like it, then it won't stick. like how durantula didn't stick. black mamba stuck because kobe wants to be known as black mamba. for KD, it will always be KD.

marketing 101, my friend. i know these stuff. this is what i do for living.

in MJ's case, air jordan became his product. if MJ never was marketable and never had his shoe, air jordan would've been his nickname and would've been more widely used by fans and media. in a way MJ's nickname really is his name. Jordan is such a great name, no nickname is necessary.

People call him Durantula all the time. It's not super marketable on shirts and ****, but it's his most popular nickname.

You are dumb as F if you think otherwise.

More people say Durantula than "Black Mamba".

durantula died after all these KD marketing effort. it was used widely, but it's dead. like blackberry dead.

and you are crazy if you think durantula is more widely used than black mamba. you need to get out of your basement.

you are totally disregarding the power of marketing. nicknames will stick if nike wants it to stick.

everything is about marketing especially when it comes to nba. without marketing, MJ would not have been MJ today. there wouldn't be jordans, there wouldn't be gatorade commercials.

not sure, but i can guarantee he won't be as popular. MJ benefited from a marketing explosion. nike and MJ were like match made in heaven. MJ had the charisma, looks, style, and nike had that drive to be the best. not too long ago, Nike was just another up and coming brand. at one point they were tier below converse. phil knight is worth 16+ billion because of MJ. it was a perfect storm. to this day, nike & MJ phenomenon is taught at every marketing & advertising classes. its global impact was just something we've never seen in shoe industry. and then MJ was just cash cow for other brands such as gatorade.

even today Jordan brand outsells brons, kobes, and all other major shoes combined.

bottom line nike and KD want you to know he is 'kd'. there is no ifs and buts about it because they just decided to push 'kd'. if they suddenly go to a different direction and try slim reaper or anything else then it means 'kd' has failed. but kd is doing very well from what i'm seeing. and this matters because kevin durant is about to become a global icon. he will be one of the face of the franchise for next 10 years. imagine KD beating bron in the finals. the new chapter of rivalry will truly begin and KD product line will double the sales. and if he somehow goes to bigger market then his global popularity will quadruple. slim reaper is a cool nickname. it fits. but i doubt it will stick. it will slowly fade away like how durantula will fade away. remember - not everybody is diehard nba fans. the core target market for nike products are casual fans. always have been.
