This is the Soccer Thread About Soccer, where we all can post whatever we want about soccer, forever. I'm mostly just doing this for myself so I can just post stuff about soccer that the majority of you probably won't care about. I'm a Jazzfan first and soccer fan second.

This thread could also be used to debate the merits/suckiness of soccer according to your personal opinions.

Today the USMNT is taking on Honduras with what appears to be their "A" Team. Landon Donovan played his last (farewell) game 4 days ago against Ecuador in which they tied 1-1 with a good goal from Mikkel Diskerud an up-and-coming midfielder for the national team.

Todays Starting line-up

Dempsey - Altidore
Zusi - Diskerud - Bradley - Bedoya
Chandler - Besler - Jones - Garza

It'll be interesting to see if Michael Bradley can bounce back from a terrible year in MLS with Toronto and if Altidore can get his legs under him after failing to get off the bench at Sunderland. It's an exciting start to a new world cup cycle!

US squandered a good amount of attacking opportunities, but Altidore with the lone goal puts US up 1-0.

Looking forward to some substitutions in the second half. Bradley looks like ****.

Soccer sucks.

But it could be good if they would just change a few things..... which they won't because of tradition and the fact that they don't have to since its the most popular sport in the world

Those who never lived outside of the U.S. will never understand how awesome soccer culture is. The NBA has always been my primary passion. But sports culture in America is pretty mundane, regardless of the sport. Sure there are hardcore NBA, NFL, and baseball fans, but it's not the same as soccer fandom overseas. For example, Growing up in Jordan, there were numerous fans for most teams in the World Cup (I was a fan of England, having lived there for a while). During the later rounds of the World Cup, everyone I knew was watching the matches. Every man, woman, and child. Businesses would give their employees time off to watch the games if they happened during the work day. And after each match, fans of whichever team won would celebrate, in the tens of thousands, all across the city, all night long. And Jordan had nothing to do with any of those teams! :D

Since moving to the U.S, I've yet experience the kind of atmosphere of camaraderie that soccer fandom provided. That's one of the few things I miss from my childhood.

Rimando was in goal for 90. Sorry, I forgot to mention. I don't think Beckerman is being considered for this cycle because hell be too old by 2018. I think he'll make a couple more appearances though.

The US looks pretty terrible today. They need to turn it over to the youngbloods sooner rather than later. Honduras equalized in the 85th after 70 minutes of producing literally no clear goal scoring opportunities. Bad performances all around. I'm blaming Bradley, that bald joke.

Miguel Ibarra was subbed into the game in the 90th minute marking the first time an NASL player was called and capped to the national team that I know of. NASL, for those that don't know, is the second division of american soccer, a level below MLS. It would be like Morris Almond making an appearance for the dream team. Maybe not that extreme...

Mix up and coming? He was supposedly a Celtic target... Can't get out of Tippeliagen. Martin Odegaard will be gone by 16.

Why did you switch "Garza and Chandler" and "Zusi and Bedoya"? Just curious. We already tried Chandler at LB and that was a failed experiment. Sure it's Klinsi's dream to play possession football which generally requires pacey and creative wingbacks, but Chandler is not the answer. Garza on the other hand...

Let's face it. The US suck at soccer for one reason, and one reason only. We have no 10. We played a 6 as a 10 this past World Cup. Shameful. We have no attacking creativity. We have no transcendent attacking player to create from a wing or direct centrally. We have no Messi or Götze (no false-9 bs) and we have no CRonaldo or Di Maria from out wide. The rest of the positions are plug and play...!

Sorry, I got my lefts and rights backwards. I woke up early (here in south korea) to watch the game and throw a quick post up.

Mikkel Diskerud seems to have improved and now does need to get himself out of Norway. JK played him at the six in today's game and he showed well, displaying a defensive presence and physicality that was absent previously. I don't necessarily think he'll be starting in 2018, but, he's a quality, if not spectacular, player for the USMNT.

We have a few potential 10s in our pool. Most of them are too young to be considered realistically, however, there is Lee Nguyen of the NE revolution, who looks like he could fill the role, at least for a couple years. He's the MVP front runner and should get a call- up in November or January, at the latest. Keep an eye out for him.

As far as skilled, speedy wingers go. . . There's Julian Green, and Joe Gyau who play for Bayern Munich (loaned to Hamburg) and Borussia Dortmund respectively. Green is 19 and Gyau is 22, young and full of potential, sadly they're both currently injured.

However, I think the U.S.'s true time to shine is down the road a decade or so. MLS teams have just began heavily investing in academies and child development that have already had short term benefits. The long term dividends are what will make us a top 12 team within the next 20 years. It's going to happen. MURICA!

I just didn't know if it was intentional because you got the cb's in the proper order haha. Impressed with your dedication!

I wasn't too impressed with his play, mostly because I believe we HAVE seen all those things at that position before. In fact, I'd say it's probably been one of the two or three strongest positions the U.S. Have ever fielded: Pablo Mastroeni, Claudio Reyna, Michael Bradley, Jermaine Jones, and Kyle Beckerman this past WC. So maybe I was looking for too much from him.

I do like watching Nguyen. He's had a great season thus far and should still be in his prime during Copa Centenario. But MLS attacking talent isn't going to solve our attacking woes on the national stage. Luis Gil has been hyped for so long because he was supposed to be that guy.. Hasn't emerged thus far.

Sure there is promise with Julian Green, but Joe Gyau is literally the embodiment of most great US soccer stars, incredible athleticism but does not have the technical abilities to match. His move to Dortmund was actually a step down because he was designated to the regionalliga team, but maybe there is hope because he's dressed a few times for the senior team and even got some bundesliga pt.

That being said, he's still only the third best American prospect at Dortmund. Pulisic>Junior Flores>Joe Gyau

Poor Luis gil, It looks like he's been relegated to third string behind Velasquez at this point. I think he's regressing as a player, and needs a move somewhere else.

MLS gets a bad rep in general but I hope a guy like Nguyen has what it takes when he gets his (second) chance with the USMNT. We could really use a guy with his skill set. I'm sure JJ is in Klinsi's ear about it if he's good enough. MLS in general, for the sake of the national team, needs to keep improving, and I think that it is. RSL, the Galaxy, and the Sounders (as of yesterday) have reserve teams set to play in USL pro with the majority of MLS hopefully following shortly. I'm sure you're aware of all of this, but it shows that they're making another vital step in their investment in player development.

I think for the US to make the next step, a large amount of american players and national teamers need to be developed an employed by a strong MLS full of properly developed homegrown talent. It seems like they're on their way. If teams invest, the players are there. It's just a matter of time.

I'm not an expert on the history of US soccer, but the only players I can think of that had a good combination of skill and speed were LD, and DMB. Joe Gyau's speed is world class, and he doesn't lack skill unlike a Robbie Findley. He just lacks polish and Klopp seems to believe in him. I'd, at least, put him above Flores in the Dortmund FC american contingent power rankings. Him along with Green and Yedlin (more of a right back, yet JK plays him on the wing) bring something I think we haven't had, in force, in the past, I'd argue.

Pulisic does look like a world beater though.

Back off trout. There is very little evidence of overlap between homosexuality and soccer. What happens in the locker room is nobodys business.

They should allow tackling in a certain zone. I don't care where that zone is but it would be awesome. Or have a zone where they are allowed to kick other players without consequence. Or get rid of out of bounds and let them throw someone up against the wall, or chainlink as the case may be. See we could make soccer very fun to watch.

albania vs. serbia fiasco was embarrassing for both parties involved.

Watched some more soccer today. It was the best.

New england, with Nguyen and Jones in midfield is a great team. Im picking them to come out of the east. Nguyen had a brace bringing his tally up to 17 goals this year, the most of any midfielder this year and the most of any american as well.
