The Stretch 4 Discussion Thread

I don't know **** about the draft, but if there's a good candidate there, higher or whatever, I think that should be the focus. Mitchell should have a guy to build alongside, and the rookie-scale contract is absolutely huge while it's in effect.

They'd also be clay to shape into the player the Jazz specifically want.

Again, I know jack about the draft this year, and don't know how to move up. HH's idea to use Marv to get there is actually totally sick. If NY would actually consider dumping Noah and their pick for the relief, you have to look at that (I doubt they would, but let's hope Lebron signals interest).

What happens if the Lakers pitch to Lebron/Paul George works and LA is suddenly faced with having to cut some major salary, fast?

In that scenario I think a team willing to take on Deng’s deal can steal a nice, young piece from LA.

Yes, the Lakers love Kuzma, but Magic Johnson isn’t walking away from Lebron/PG just for the sake of holding onto him. This is obviously just one “what if” scenario but as usual, there will be a couple of teams going “All In” on some new version of a super team and that will free up some pieces a team like the Jazz can swoop in and pick up for cheaper than we expect.
They can stretch Deng, and Kuzma is the most untouchable player on their roster.

Sure. Sac does have cap space next year, but most FA just use them as leverage to get more from the destination they really want to go to. I know you are talking about Hill.

With Harris he could be extended by the clips and then traded 6 months later... so maybe by the trade deadline. If not just wait until FA... I don't want to do the midseason dance. Plus we could get in on Middleton or another FA.

Table Harris for now... revisit later.

So hypothetically, we could trade Burks and Udoh for Carroll (http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=y7f7zwnt ) Brooklyn does it to save money and maybe they have more faith in Burks becoming something for them than Carroll.

Then we sign Tolliver to a Thabo or Jerekbo type deal. Overall, we get two more needed players for SF and PF while not sacrificing 2019 cap space. We also get to keep Jerekbo and Thabo so we are that much deeper.

I generally love building through the draft but I think now is the time to strike if we're going to make a move in Trade/FA (primary assets being expirings and/or first round picks).

Rudy and Donovan still have lots of room to grow but they're also ready now. We get a third Musketeer and we could contend now, and for years to come.

This organization ain't the Cavs, but that's what they tried when they got Lebron and ended up marooned with a slapped-together roster.

With the Millers, I think we’ve seen that when this team nears legit contention they’re willing to do the spending necessary to get this squad over the hump.
We have? Never happened in the Larry H. era. Jazz went into the tax once to keep Millsap until Boozer's contract expired.

Lindsey spent ONCE in his tenure by bringing in Joe Johnson and trading for Fat Boris. Still, payroll was far under the tax line.

Jazz have never spent to get over the hump. I do give DL a pass this year as he was reserving money for Hayward and there was little left on the market after Jy 4th.

Dude, you gotta have a good reason to go north of the tax line, and there hasn't been one in a decade.

Different circumstances, that was the ultimate win-now-and-appease-LeBron scenario. DL wouldn't do anything like that. I'm talking about a smart, calculated move that would snag us another core piece without leveraging the future of the franchise or breaking up the existing core. Maybe it's not possible but I think now is an appropriate time for the franchise to actively explore those opportunities.

I'm not talking about Cavs round two, I'm talking about when Lebron was drafted. They never had more time than then, and as much as the iron is hot now, the Jazz will not have more time than now*.

*IF there's a guy in the draft that is getable and also worth that investment.

Jazz can clear more than the MLE if Favors leaves.

Renounce rights to Thabo, Udoh and Jerebko. Neto, too.

Re-sign Exum. IINM, his cap hold is around $15m. At least that's what I saw on one web site.

Trade or stretch Burks.

I think it far more likely - and maybe even wiser - to stand pat. I dont like most of the 4's that are available, with the rare exception of if NO is willing to deal Mirotic to clear cap room (and they no longer have to since Chicago took Asik of their hands).

Re-sign Favs and Dante. Best time for a trade would be at the deadline. Jazz would have a pretty big expiring in Burks and could throw in Jerebko, Udoh or Thabo as necessary to make salaries match.

Also, hope that O'Neale, Bradley and this year's pick develop into decent prospects for a rebuilding team wanting to trade a vet.

I also disagree about Love. I think he fits the team perfectly. 3pt shooter when he plays with Gobert; backup 5 when Rudy sits.

Ever heard of Demarcus Cousins?

The Jazz were a couple million over the cap during the 2 finals seasons, but I get it, that’s not exactly tax spending territory.

Let me rephrase my statement: The Miller family won’t stand in the way of paying who they’ve gotta pay if they legitimately feel as if they have a championship caliber team.

As other posters have said, you don’t go into the tax for anything less than what you feel like is a slam dunk, but should that opportunity present itself, I think ownership won’t shy away from the scenario.

I'd add Mario Hezonja to the list. More of a SF but at 6'8" could play some PF. He's 23 so fits in perfect with the group age wise. He's euro and lets face it DL likes his euro's. If the Magic match a max offer to Gordon, they can't afford him. He's not great, takes some bad shots and not much of a playmakeer. You would be betting on his size, athleticism, and Quin being able to coach him up to a pretty good player. Does the MLE get him? I don't know. Do to unique circumstances though, he is unrestricted.

They'll keep Kuzma and likely be forced not to extend Julius Randle. Kuzma's rookie deal is pretty cheap.

Thabo is going to be the starter next year, besides the first 5 games, which will be Jae Crowder. There isnt anyone good enough on the free agent market to be the starting 4 given the Jazz's available money (all they have is the MLE at 8.6 million).

I would love to get Anthony Tolliver. The guy is one of the true shooting big men, not just a big guy who learned to be a shooter. He is a true marksman.

He would definitely be one of my top targets in free agency.

I'd give him a shot to come off the bench and make 3's.

I have to wonder why he's traded, waived or not resigned almost every year. Dude's like on his 9th team in 10 years.

Seems like no one wants to talk about Jabari. But I’ll bite.

He’s a perfect stretch 4 and he doesn’t require a trade like Tobias would. And Milwaukee is unlikely to match.

Yes he’s been very disappointing so far. But he hasn’t even ever had a full offseason where he’s not recovering. And Milwaukee is a joke. If anyone could get him right it’s Quin and our staff.

I know it’s risky, but that would be the ‘we’re going for it’ move. You don’t need to take Joakim Noah or trade our pick + more to get a guy like Harris. And you can’t just let Favors walk and not replace him with someone. If all we do it replace his minutes with Crowder and Thabo then we are a worse team overall, maybe by a lot.

I’ll trust DL, but if it happens I’ll be excited, because the guy has a ton of talent. Resign Exum, draft Simons. Get everyone healthy.

Rubio
Mitchell
Ingles
Parker
Gobert

Exum
O’Neale
Crowder
Burks
Simons
Filler dudes, I liked reading about Tolliver.

I’d be so ****ing excited for next year. But I will be anyway I guess. I trust the team, and will talk myself into any move they make until proven otherwise.

Kuzma is perfect next to Lebron and George, or probably any other roster combination. He is not going anywhere.

Interestly, Hoopshype had a rumour about Lakers moving Ball. But Ball is never coming to the Jazz, in fact I don't know who would take that on. New York?
