Pretty sure I didn't say anything about 1984. Neither did Beantown. He said they beat the #15 team in the nation. I didn't realize Utah had played Auburn or LSU (depending on which poll you look at). The only thing that matters is final ranking. Since you mentioned 1984, I'll remind you that BYU's final rank that year was 1. Something Utah has never done. But go ahead say Cougar fans dwell on the past. It was a Ute who brought it up this time.

And since I did bring up 1984, it was BYU's win against the preseason #3 that vaulted them up the polls. Then again, it was just the polls and you're right, they did get votes to finish #1. I've never disputed that and even defended it because that was the system at the time. But were they the best team? Very doubtful, just the only undefeated team and the Utes have never gone undefeated, have they?

Well in the Ute fans' defense, Oklahoma was ranked #3 in the preseason last year when BYU beat them, and they finished unranked with 5 losses. So the fans that were saying all that stuff (and I was certainly one of them) were absolutely correct.

If Pitt finishes unranked with 5 losses, then you might be able to say those situations are similar. And even then, Pitt wasn't ranked #3 coming into that game so it still wouldn't really be the same thing. But my guess is Pitt finishes in the top 25 anyway so they weren't really over rated by that much (if at all) so it will be a non issue.

BYU went from #20 to #9 after that Oklahoma win. Utah went from unranked to #20 after the Pitt win. Not quite the same thing...
