The Trey Burke Thread

Trey Burke is going to be a popular topic of conversation this season.

This is going to be an important season for him. Last season there was no pressure. He came in and started right away, he was by far the best PG on the team and performed pretty well for a rookie. He had issues with conditioning, size, and strength, he died on screens often, his defense was poor, and he did show a tendency to chuck. You know, rookie ****. He finished the season 3rd in ROTY voting in what is looking like a weaker draft class and he won the Skills Challenge with DLil at All Star Weekend!!!! He's been trying to live up to the leader role he talks about often, and I like what he's done so far. Showing up to the draft and repping the Jazz, I thought that was cool. He's been very positive even though we drafted a PG. So far, I think he's handled himself well.

With Dante Exum having a good showing in his first Summer League game yesterday (it's one game, bro), some people are a calling for his head and some think he's the PG of the future, most are still on the fence.

I'm on the fence, but still optimistic that Trey Burke will play PG on this team. Here's why:

1. He's young
2. He has a good attitude and seems very determined to succeed. He takes himself very seriously. I like that.
3. He has a good track record. He's been very successful in the past and I haven't seen anything yet that makes me think he won't be successful again.
4. He's young
4. He's ****ing clutch
5. He doesn't have to be the best player on the team.

As I mentioned above, he had obvious issues last season. But I think it's way too quick to judge Trey. He had a decent rookie season, not great, but very good IMO. I hope he's able to figure it out, and I think he will. I think #5 is important to remember here. Assuming Exum becomes a go-to player in the next few seasons, Trey doesn't have to the best player on the team, it's unrealistic to treat him like he has to be. He doesn't have to be the best player to lead the team. He at bare minimum he needs to play defense, facilitate the offense and hit his shots. If he's at least a starter in the NBA we're good to go.

It will be fun to watch the Exum/Burke backcourt work itself out, and I hope Trey improves throughout this season.

**fart**

I think they can really complement each other well. Their games fulfill each other's some weaknesses relatively. The only issue I am afraid of getting in the way is the ego conflict.

I am really worried that if he can't find a way to get into the paint and be effective on occasion, then Trey well be relegated to being a backup. Which is okay with me. I don't know if it would be okay with Trey. He must figure out a way to be effective on D. We have Exum, Hayward and Burks to do the penetrating which works if he can shoot better.

Trey can't get into the paint. And, he'll never be a lockdown defender. Unless he can become faster with his pass AND a knockdown 3-pnt shooter, then he's a bust. Simple.

Trey was struggling with very simple offense last night. He couldn't even use a screen well enough to create flaws in the defense.

(BTW, Garry Harris scored 30 last night. I'd be shocked if we couldn't have traded Trey for a pick that would've nabbed that guy. 3&D all day and night. ****.)

I think it come down to this...... will trey be the best point guard between exum and burke? If not, then he needs to either be fine with being a backup, or needs to be moved.

Fwiw i really like what i see from trey in regards to leadership, body language, personality.

But his actual basketball skills leave ALOT to he desired.

Also, i dont like how much his mom get involved on social media. (Not that it really matters, just sayin)

So for those proposing we move Trey to the bench, at this point what is your starting lineup?

Exum
Burks
Hayward
Kanter
Favors

Cause I'm not gonna lie. That gives me a boner.

I love Trey, but the one thing that concerns me - as people have mentioned in this thread - is that he cannot consistently get into the lane off the dribble to get the opposing defense disorganized. The bottom line is that we will need a PG to do that in order to take the next step as a team. I'm excited to see how he progresses this upcoming season.

All that being said, I think we NEED to get Neto here this season to see if he can provide that element or sign a point guard who can give us that look.

Exum has superstar potential, but I fear his confidence would get shattered if he had to log heavy minutes as point guard as a rookie. I'm fully confident Snyder will put the guys in roles in which they are most likely to succeed, so I can't imagine that's our starting lineup. Not saying those five won't share the court together a bunch this season, but I'd be shocked if that was the unit on the court in a close game down the stretch.

Trey will never like being second fiddle to Exum.Trey was freezing Dante out last night and on 1 play pissed Exum off with Dante throwing his hands in the air standing wide open.We have Exum and Trey hasn't ruined his stock.I don't think these 2 can play together because they both want to be lead dog. When rubber hits the road Im choosing Exum every time.Get something for Trey now and bring over Neto or sign a PG to play behind Exum, Dante is a point guard and needs as many minutes playing only that.

EXUM

Aside from being physically weaker than almost every PG he'll face this regular season, he has no left hand which opposing teams will identify right away thus making his life hell if he had to play point guard/primary ball-handler this upcoming season. I made a thread about this where I explain it in a little more detail.

Yep..... or favors at pf and kanter at center..... either way, thise are the 5 i would like to see on the starting lineup the most.

I think that in the beginning of the year trey will (and maybe should) start, but by jan/feb i would like exum to be ready

??

I don't want to get into a pissing match because I'm as excited about Exum in a Jazz uni as anyone, but to not acknowledge that weakness is either deluded or ignorant.

HAHAHAHAHA Ill crush you in a pissing match on this subject, Whats the basis behind that statement?

Ive seen all the Exum footage to be found, read all the local articles on him throughout the years. I vehemently disagree and can produce a ton of footage of him going left with spectacular results. He also finishes well with his left hand around the basket.

I'll start with this.. Isnt his "signature crossover" going left?

Only thing I don't like is that I feel the 2nd unit would be too weak without Burks.

Can Burke carry a 2nd unit? Do we want him to try?

I know Burks can do those things pretty well and actually make the 2nd unit a strength.

Interesting observation about Trey freezing Exum out at times last night. I had the same thought a couple times and remember specifically the play you're referring to. I hope we're just imagining things, but there were a couple times where it looked like a real possibility.
