Just finished catching up with this series, watched it all now.
I have to say, I thought that this was the best season of them all so far. The only thing I really didn't like was the Governor BS (well, him and the cheap cliffhanger ending). To me he was never an interesting or even psychologically believable character. I love a good villain, but he was pretty much psychopathically evil for the sake of the show
having a villain. Then they
almost made him interesting by beginning to redeem him, before making him descend back into megalomania for no apparent reason. He ruined season 3 for me, and put somewhat of a black mark on season 4. Thank God he's finally dead. If they're going to do villains, please let them be interesting ones.
Too bad about Hershel, I'm a big fan of Scott Walker as an actor, and I liked his character. I understand why they killed him... the writers/showrunners no doubt feel that having a character that spotlessly virtuous around is bad for the show's overall health. They killed Dale for the same reason, so everything becomes more morally gray all-around. But I was glad to see Hershel in the final episode, even if it was only in flashback.
So who is a better character in this increasing train-wreck of a series? Darrell has the most depth and the most value to the group of all of them. Maybe Glenn, but beyond that there is no competition really.
Seriously? Glenn and Darrell? We have very different tastes. Glenn is likeable, but pretty bland as a character. Darrell was far more interesting when Merle was still around. Now he's basically Walking Dead Jesus. He's become so over-the-top awesome that I find him less interesting now. Don't get me wrong, still one of the better characters, but he's definitely not my favorite.
Best character? Give me Carol. Hell of a lot of interest there. Her whole storyline this season was superb.
EDIT: Also, I think Carl is fine. He's kind of a prick, but that's a perfectly believable thing to be given what he's gone through. And he had two of the best bits this season... when he went off by himself while Rick was unconscious and got his *** kicked, following by the scene between him and Michonne just before they enter Terminus.
