The Walking Dead

lol+meme.gif

What can I say.. I like stories a lot. Breaking bad had some awesome story lines going on in seasons 2-4. The death of Gustavo felt like the biggest climax I could see the show getting. I just couldn't feel the same anticipation through the first 5 episodes that I did watch of season 5 to get hooked, so it became less entertaining.

I also liked the Walking Dead better as that is more my thing. Not trying to compare the writing of the two. Breaking Bad was fantastic. Just prefer the Walking Dead.

What is the story with Walking Dead? Just people wandering around with absolutely no purpose.

The writers are just treading water the entire time.

Characters that I can understand(even if poorly acted); not just surviving the zombie apocolypse, but reforming society in a way that perpetuates life when the world is moreso than ever out to kill you; having a very tightly knit group of friends that you can trust your life with; having differing opinions than those friends and the lengths some people go to influence their opinions on others; how you relate to outsiders trying to take what you have; the length you will actually go to survive.. The list goes on. There's a lot more to it than the guns, gore and guts.

There are only three points I can make to explain my disillusionment:

1. The story after the start of season 5 failed to peak my interest after Gustavo's death
2. The actors failed to reach me, and make me feel like they were people
3. The setting wasn't interesting enough to compensate for the previous two

I mean, it's not a bad show. It just hasn't found a way to reach me in season 5. I'm aware that I'm likely the minority here, and that's cool. I've always known I'll go back and try to finish all of it, maybe I'll do that this weekend. I've just gotta find something that I can relate to that keeps me enthralled.

I agree with elroacho about TWD. Not all of life is adventure, and not every danger is a zombie trying to eat your face. TWD does a decent job of showing how hectic, boring, slow, fast, scary, depressing, and awesome a post-apocolyptic world could be. The dynamics within the group and their efforts to rebuild society are, for me at least, easily as if not far more interesting than the "zombie problem". To me the zombies simply set the parameters of the new world, kind of like the cold war, and the real story is how the people adapt and deal with the new rules. It is character-based more than I think people give it credit for, as really is all good fiction, be it in print or film. If you don't have characters you can care about the story matters little, imo.

But to me Breaking Bad was the better show all the way around. It is very hard to compare the 2, but I think overall, in nearly every way, Breaking Bad was better: better writing, acting, story-lines, and more importantly the underlying story, which is fully necessary to keep the other "story-lines" moving and relevant as time passes, as well as how the series was wrapped up as a complete filled-out final "work", so to speak. It was a fascinating case-study in how our choices lead us to different paths, and whole new sets of choices, and how a decent man can allow pride and a series of choices and justifications to draw him down a path he would undoubtedly not have chosen for himself from the outset. To me this is reflected in all of our lives to some degree, and that is why it resonated with me. Who hasn't made choices they regretted, or wondered at times "how did I get here, right here, right now?"

But as elroacho mentioned, every story will be taken by some people differently than others and have a deeper impact on some than others and to me that is what makes fiction great. The meaning changes as the reader/listener/viewer filters the information and the story is therefore the same, and different, for everyone.

Cool stuff.

Have you guys ever seen Jericho?

No Zombies, but at least 1 million times better of a "survival" show than Walking Dead.

Got cancelled after a few seasons, but really really good.

Funny you mention that here. Before I got sucked into the first few seasons of Breaking bad, I was watching Jericho. That's another show I'll have to get with.

What did you guys think of Carnivale and Deadwood? I thought they were fantastic, but then got cancelled prematurely. :(

I'm about halfway through the first season of Deadwood. It's alright so far, I kind of expect it to get better.

How far did you make it through Jericho?

It is on Netflix and I did watch it. Another very good show.

Not far. Like halfway through episode two. But after re-watching the first episode, I think I've got the gf hooked on it. So we'll be finishing that.

Swears and cusses don't offend me, but the number and randomness they were used in Deadwood reached the point of ridiculousness and became distracting for me.

"Do you want a ****sucking whiskey?" "Yes I want a mother****ing whiskey. Oh, and bring me a **** steak, too." "Okay, have a nice ****sucking day you **** mother****er."

I will try that ****sucking show again.

I didn't mind Jericho but I bet a jr high drama class could come up with more realistic set designs. To me that show was way to pretty.

It's been awhile since I watched it, what are you talking about? Like, stuff just wasn't wrecked enough or what?

The issue with TWD is it's turning more into a character driven show.

And the characters are boring, uninteresting and boring. Did I mention boring?

The amusing part of this is the contrast between the people spouting off things like this and yet trying to maintain their composure. It just entertains me to no end... I was so sad that show got cancelled. I liked it more than Justified. A lot more than Justified.

I use that as a comparison as he's the main actor in both.

An interesting plot twist last night. I wonder what happens to that character. Do we see them again? Do they reconcile? Or is that character being used in the spin off Walking Dead show that got the green light from The Walking Dead.

So if we are trying to avoid spoilers this will be hard to discuss, but I wonder more what that character's love interest will think about that character's exile. I don't want the other character to leave due to that character being kicked out. That is one character I would not want to leave the show or it would affect how much I want to continue watching.

Ok time to figure out how to use the spoiler code, or else people will just have to accept there are spoilers in this thread.

Ok so let's do this, list off, of the remaining characters, which you do NOT want to see leave the show (killed off, whatever) in descending order of importance.

My list:

1) Darrell
2) Glenn
3) Herschell
4) Maggie
5) Michonne
6) Tyrese (although he is becoming more unstable so his stock is slipping imo)

Other than that I really don't care if they kill off any of the other characters, or remove them in some other way. I would be fine if they killed off Rick and anyone in his family. I would be more upset if his son were killed off than him. None of the newer characters have enough staying power at this point to matter much, imo.
