Thoughts on Rudy

Let's face it, all Jazz fans realize that Gobert just isn't the same this year. He doesn't rim run hardly at all, his vertical and defensive quickness on hedging out at the perimeter has been lagging, he can't catch a ball, he has no offensive moves and even his defensive abilities don't seem dominant like he once did. Is it scouting? Have teams just figured him out? Is it the injury still affecting him? While it is easy to blame these things, I personally believe that Rudy simply didn't get any better over the summer. His breakout may have been more of a flash in the pan rather than actual substance. It is irritating because he has all the tools and the passion to become one of the greatest. When was the last time Rudy showed that edge and aggressive competitiveness to swat every shot, run the court, dunk with ferocity and take pride in controlling the game? I'm not sure I've seen it at all this season. However, I do believe Rudy will bounce back. His knee probably has slowed him down a bit and his confidence might be low right now, but he is just too hard of a worker to stay in a funk. It's not a given, it's something he needs to really work at and want, but I believe Gobert will be the player fans loved again. Hopefully sooner rather than later, but either way, look out NBA, Rudy is coming back.

BTW, here's the best Gobert video on the web.

I'm just gonna say it.

Players playing for their national teams during the summer ****ed us over this season, badly.

Good hell. People started bitching about Rudy during and after the Blazers game, in which Rudy had 5 blocks and had the paint shut down for a good part of the game. Utah gets their asses handed to them in the first half of that game without Rudy. Comments like the one above baffle the mind. Rudy is and always will be a very limited offensive player, but his dominance on the defensive end can't be overstated. I don't have any idea why Quin would be trying to run the offense through Rudy as much as he was at the beginning against the blazers, but it's up to him to try work the offense around Rudy and still keep him involved enough to not feel shut out.

Utah played a red hot blazers team down to the wire on their floor in a game that could have gone either way, and beat the Rockets in a hard fought game, both of which they are battling for playoff position, yet people are panicking, as if doom and gloom is on the horizon. The spurs are just a flat out better team at this point, so that loss means little. I think the run Utah went on last year spoiled the fans and are causing unrealistic expectations. News flash: We miss Exum's defense more than most people realize, and for now we just aren't as good as were last year. We probably won't be either, until we address a few issues, like defending better against teams shooting the 3.

Rudy is averaging a double double with 2.5 blocks. He is damn good. He struggles for a couple games and all of a sudden he sucks? Yall crazy.

This is his first full year starting. He improved a ton. He will be great next year too.

The smurf is right.

I think teams have seen him enough that they are sorting out how to play against him. Like most players there will be bad match ups for Rudy but the real test is if he can sort out how to keep learning and adjusting himself. Rudy will be fine.

I'm not saying Rudy is bad. He's an awesome player but he has not improved much from last year and he is frankly very limited. Until he gets an offensive game that is more than lay ups/dunks and can help open the floor a little more with an 8-10 ft jumper, he wont be able to make that next step. I definitely think Exum makes the Gobert factor even stronger because his length and quickness shuts down the 3s and forces inside shots late in the shot lock against Gobert. I also wasn't trying to say Gobert last year was a fluke, just that sometimes I wonder if we over-hyped him going into the year.

Frank must be bored again.
