What's new

Thurl

Yep. Did sales for a couple months during summer break from the U. My manager was a dick to me because I didn’t attend church and the culture at the company was toxic because of how high and mighty some considered themselves. Super Dell was actually cool to me when he came in because I was selling machines like hot cakes and making him more money.

Only job where I didn’t put a two week notice in. Also the only job where I told a superior to cram a broom up their *** as it’s the only action they’ll ever get.
When Totally Awesome went under, they had left a huge “Awesome!” sign by the dumpster. It was like 10’ long. We took it to our apartment complex and rested it up against the tree. It stayed there for a couple weeks because I think everyone assumed it was there for a reason.

As far as i understand the rules of the forum shouldn't this have happened at Best Buy?

I’m not gonna take shots at Thurl. He’s in an impossible spot next to Captain Dumbass.
OMFG this.

But in a vacuum I think Thurl does pretty good. It's obvious he's filling in but he's intelligent, articulate, and knows the game, so his contributions are generally solid.

Did you guys catch the part tonight where Boler tried to make it sound like he knew how to calculate effective field goal percentage? It was pretty lol.

Also, Deng played at Duke for, what, 1 or 2 years, and has been in the NBA for something like 15 seasons. But still: “Deng, outta Duke.”

I can’t wait for Boler to call it quits.

Based on the games, Harpring chooses which games he works based on team and locale.

Not surprising he looked at the schedule and say no to Minnesota in January, or Detroit, Indiana and those games in January. But he came back for the Milwaukee game. Wonder why?
Maybe he has a few outstanding warrants? You really need to pay those parking tickets.

This right here has me actually laughing at my desk. You are so spot on with this. The Duke comment was so random and irrelevant.

I can't wait until we play Dallas again so Boler can reference some obscure club team in Germany Dirk used to play for.

I have no problem with our announcers. Boler is fine. I like Harp and I like Thurl. Way better than most hometown crews.
Having to watch other team's streams for the first time this season after giving up Dish, I'd have to agree. I expected good things from big market teams like the Warriors and Clippers, but was utterly disappointed. I will say the Boler-less, Steve Brown games are a bit painful, even though I like the guy. Thankfully, those are rare.

If I remember correctly, I think Harpring's deal is for his family and as a man who has to travel for work and be away from my young children more than I'd like, I totally understand. It sucks and if I can do anything to reduce that time, I will. Especially where he missed so much time already travelling as a player, it makes sense to me to work a deal like he has.

The only thing I'm not a fan of this year is Alema's new co-host. Can't put my finger on why, but I'm not a fan of his.

After 20 years of NBALP I can attest to that. There are literally 4 or 5 guys who stand out - the rest of them range from mediocre to outright awful.

The one good thing I can say is the amount of obnoxious homerism has declined in most markets - it's still there but when I first got LP there were certain opposing team's feeds that were completely unlistenable.

Can't believe the thread made it this far without a mention of Thurl's MVP-level attire. Alema on the other hand...lol.

Thurl is solid. As for Captain Dumbass

"They put it in the blender, like you talk about"

No, CD, they swung the ball after a broken up play kick out. His utter stupidity will never end, so maybe my complaining should. Thankfully we get ESPN two games a year.

The worst part about this is Thurl backed him up "yeah, the blender...". You know the guy is sitting there jabbing his pen nto his ribs and thinking the same thing we all are.

Longtime lurker here. Just wanted mention Mr. Locke in this discussion. My biggest hang-up with him was how he would often put Boone or Thurl in an awkward spot with random questions he would ask. He showed very little self awareness and was blind to social cues in a conversation. That was a couple of years ago. I listened to him a this year and was pleasantly surprised that the awkwardness is almost gone. I am now in his camp.

The thing about Bolerjack that just amazes me is that he's apparently been calling basketball games for 3 decades. I mean, whenever I listen to him, he still sounds like a third-rate gridiron football player who is covering for an actual basketball announcers. "Hey, I played on the JV basketball team of my small-town high school so I'm vaguely familiar with the game and the lingo."

I mean, how in the world do you miss so many basic things? You have to have at least as good of a view of action as I do, seeing as you're at the game and you have monitors with the same feed those of us at home get. But you could bet your house on Boler getting at least 4-5 things wrong each game. A guy is two feet inside a line but it's a three, apparently. Or he's two feet behind a line but it's a long two for Boler. If only there was some way for refs to indicate with a gesture immediately after the shot whether it was a two or a three. Same thing with fouls and which player they are assessed against. It's not like the refs tell the scorer's table. He mixes up players all the time, as if subs aren't announced. It just feels like the game is being called by someone who has vast experience in broadcasting, but no experience in basketball.

Interesting. Alema's new co-host, Michael Smith, used to be the Clippers color guy. I think most people thought the combination of Ralph Lawler and Mike Smith was very good. I don't know who Lawler has alongside him now that Mike Smith is gone. I generally liked the Clippers broadcasters even though I kind of hated the Clippers.

Edit: Looks like Smith spent 18 years as a broadcaster with the Clippers after hanging up his playing career. I had no idea he was there that long. Oh and they replaced him with Bruce Bowen.

I like him a lot. He's not amazing or anything but for a first year guy he's very comfortable in the role.
