What's new

Thurl

Interesting. Alema's new co-host, Michael Smith, used to be the Clippers color guy. I think most people thought the combination of Ralph Lawler and Mike Smith was very good. I don't know who Lawler has alongside him now that Mike Smith is gone. I generally liked the Clippers broadcasters even though I kind of hated the Clippers.

Edit: Looks like Smith spent 18 years as a broadcaster with the Clippers after hanging up his playing career. I had no idea he was there that long. Oh and they replaced him with Bruce Bowen.

At first I was like who is this guy, but Michael Smith knows his stuff and I'm starting to realize he might be the best we've ever had at in-depth analysis.

The thing about Bolerjack that just amazes me is that he's apparently been calling basketball games for 3 decades. I mean, whenever I listen to him, he still sounds like a third-rate gridiron football player who is covering for an actual basketball announcers. "Hey, I played on the JV basketball team of my small-town high school so I'm vaguely familiar with the game and the lingo."

I mean, how in the world do you miss so many basic things? You have to have at least as good of a view of action as I do, seeing as you're at the game and you have monitors with the same feed those of us at home get. But you could bet your house on Boler getting at least 4-5 things wrong each game. A guy is two feet inside a line but it's a three, apparently. Or he's two feet behind a line but it's a long two for Boler. If only there was some way for refs to indicate with a gesture immediately after the shot whether it was a two or a three. Same thing with fouls and which player they are assessed against. It's not like the refs tell the scorer's table. He mixes up players all the time, as if subs aren't announced. It just feels like the game is being called by someone who has vast experience in broadcasting, but no experience in basketball.

I'm pretty sure that's intentional. Bolerjack calls things that we only get on replay which shows his vantage point is seeing much more. You know, as you would expect someone on the front row to see. It's not like QS and staff or the opposing coaching staff or the players or any of the color commentators are up in arms all the time about the refs scoring a three as a two. Bolerjack is the only person getting it wrong and consistently.

Bolerjack is stupid and wants that to be his thing. The idea of a stupid person.

Years back, Jazz radio picked up on this fake bickering, fake outrage, jabbing each other stuff that they see on ESPN. Spence Checkets was the worsted. Insufferably bad at it. Bolerjack picked up on it too and did it in his own way - stupidity. It's his thing, everybody needs to have a thing, something they are known for. Bolerjack has chosen stupidity as the charming thing people will remember him fondly by. Not excellence like Hot Rod, but stupidity.

The only thing I'm not a fan of this year is Alema's new co-host. Can't put my finger on why, but I'm not a fan of his.

Michael Smith is just a little too animated for my taste. He seems too eager, but perhaps he'll settle down. His clothing combos though . . .

I find it amusing to look for Boler's mistakes, and I am always glad to hear and see Harpring. He's goofier than I realized he would be, but it's cute.

Boone clearly has Alzheimer's disease, he's hard to listen to sometimes. I like Harpring, I don't understand the hate he gets on the board here.
I honestly think most of the hate is simply because we hear him the most.
Same with boler hate. If we had someone else doing games there would be some decent amount of people who would be annoyed by that person too.

Yeah I thought the same thing about Michael Smith at first but as I've watched the post-games I've bought into him.

Boone doesn't have Alzheimer's; he knows basketball, but has always struggled to put his thoughts into words, which leads to a lot of incomplete sentences. I love the guy.

Harpring was slightly annoying his first year or two of broadcasting, because he couldn't do color for the Jazz without it quickly becoming all about him and his playing days. I thought he settled into his role as a broadcaster and became quite good.

This year, Harp seems to be auditioning for an ESPN or TNT gig. His non-stop praise for certain players on opposing teams can be irritating, at least for this Jazz fan. I don't mind him pointing out exceptionally good plays by non-Jazz players, as long he remembers he is a Jazz broadcaster.

I like most of our announcers but I really hope Michael Smith doesn't stick. Don't care for him.
The Jazz are unlikely to dump a former BYU basketball player, unless he is really, really bad. Michael Smith is good enough to stick.

This right here is my biggest pet peeve. If I wanted to hear about how great the opposing teams players were I'd listen to their feed. There are times when an unbelievable play by a Jazz man goes uncalled while Harpring is praising the other teams star over some insignificant point.

Years of hearing Boler say only one thing about opposing players has probably had a hell of an effect on Harp. Poor guy. I mean, how many hundreds of games has Harp sat there and heard Boler just say the name of a player’s college and then segue into ****ing up the call of the gameplay?

I wonder how many different ways Harp is over-correcting for Boler in his daily life? I bet he had no idea his job would come with an involuntary lobotomy.

Calling it now... Next year, Mike Smith will be doing color commentary on the games Harp misses, while Big T will transition back to his studio role.
