Trade Deadline

Marc Stein: "ESPN sources say Rockets, if Ty Lawson trade talks with Utah were to collapse, would strongly consider waiving Lawson if they can't move him"

Gotta say, this does not sound like a trade that's going down.

If he was waived, how does it work as far as ateam signing him? We could offer him a contract for the rest of the year at say a pro-rated 3m salary and the Rockets pay him the pro-rated remainder? I ask because how many teams are even under the cap to sign him. Other than us.

Lawson is 28 and will be 29 this November. That's not too old as far as getting some great play out of him yet old enough that he may wisen up and get his act together here with Quin and our core's guidance.

If this trade actually went down, I'd prefer Ariza or Brewer. Either would be an upgrade to CJ as the 4th wing and good depth off the bench. Getting Jones might mean the Jazz are throwing Lyles development away. Lyles needs more mins not less.
I get what you are saying about lyles but I really like jones and this team needs to try to start winning now rather than being more concerned with developing a 20 year old imo.

Not sure how realistic Jones is though. We'd probably have to part with a significant piece

Ya, I wouldn't want to give up too much.
Maybe Houston is willing to give up jones for very little because they feel they need to trade lawson.

I just looked up jones numbers. They are not very good.
Almost every single stat is down this year. He isn't playing much and shooting bad from the field, bad from three, and bad from the line.
(45%, 31%, and 67%)

On second thought, I'm with thee. Just develop and play lyles

From everything I've read, it sounds like the Jazz wouldn't get anyone else in the deal, but send an additional player with Trey, probably Pleiss. Besides I think this is a deal where both teams mutually just want to get rid of players.

While I think Jones might have the higher celling due to greater athletic ability. I think Lyles will be a more sophisticated offensive player, and always playing next to Rudy or Favors, his defensive flaws can be somewhat covered up. I've been his biggest supporter since before the draft. He's shooting better then I ever thought he would this year, which tells me he could end up being quite good from three and midrange.

Ya I'm with ya. I would rather play lyles than jones

I'm gonna be so let down if we don't do any trades. It would be like a girl talking a big game, coming into my bedroom, letting me feel her up and kiss her all over but then she never reciprocates and I'm left with blue ones.

Who else might be interested in Burke+Pleiss if the Rockets are just going to waive Lawson? Doubt there'd be many other teams willing or able to claim him before he clears waivers. Jazz just have to move some salary to be able to claim if that's what they want to do.

I feel like teams who are trying to win it all often look for a solid backup point.

Cavs-Mo, Dellavedova
Dubs-Barbosa, Livingston
Thunder-Augustin, Payne
Spurs-Mills, McCallum

I see only these four teams as having a chance to win it all and while they wouldn't say it, I think the other 26 teams probably feel the same way. Having said that, I don't see any of these teams desiring Trey so I think our best bet may be to trade Trey and Pleiss to a team looking to dump salary. The problem with that is Trey and Pleiss are both signed for next year so we'd likely have to take someone on who's longer term than that or more in salary than that.

Don't know how reliable this site is but its looking like Utah won't make the deal with Houston.

The author got one key detail very wrong. If Lawson is waived, he can be claimed by a team with enough cap space to absorb his contract. That is, Ty won't necessarily get to choose where he plays if he's waived. If the Jazz are able to dump Trey and Pleiss without taking salary back, they'd have the cap space to claim Lawson.
